1. Livelihoods Frame work Vs. Need based approach
Dr. Sai Bhaskar Reddy Nakka, email: saibhaskarnakka@gmail.com
“A livelihood comprises the capabilities, assets (including both material and social
resources) and activities required for a means of living. A livelihood is
sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks and
maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets both now and in the future,
while not understanding the natural resource base” (Carney, 1998)
The poor should be provided opportunities for diversification.
Develop strategies for others for less diversification of the livelihoods activites.
Technology and Poor
The technology should be closer to the poor, the ongoing technological options that are
less input cost and less risky, tested over several years in the past is most suitable to the
poor.

Can we use Food as an alternative for promotion of livelihoods.
Organisation of Poor into SHGs:
The assumption is that the poor peoples first priority is food, they buy food with
their limited earnings and they are unable to save for thrift and they are not in groups.
Can we give grains as an incentive against their savings and becoming part of an
SHG?
