1. Priorities and Time
Management
Or Beating the Crunch before Crunchtime
Or Trying to Figure out What’s REALLY
Important
2. It’s Summertime still, right?
At Minarets, how long into the first semester will
it be before you really have to study or do
homework?
Why worry, or even think about, tests, mid
terms, finals, final projects, or AP tests?
Now is the time to be thinking about
extracurriculars, sports, clubs, fun stuff, right?
3. Crunch Time is Coming...
School/Eight Classes
College Applications (Seniors)
Extracurriculars --Clubs, Sports, FFA, Leadership
Jobs
Families
Religion
Girlfriends/Boyfriends, Friend Friends, Socializing, Eating,
Sleeping, Hygiene, TV, Videogames,
No mention of facebook...
4. Yes, it’s different for everybody, but...
See how the following scenario matches your life
or how it will match your life...
How is it different, how close is it?
5. When do you sleep?
Overall Time--Seven Days x 24 Hours = 168 Hours/Week
School Time--Five Days x 7 Hours = 35 Hours/Week (133 hours
left)
Study Time--Five Days x 2 Hours = 10 Hours/Week (123)
Work Time (Jobs)--Five Days x 3-4 Hours = 15- 20 Hours/Week
(103)
Extracurriculars--Five Days x 3-4 Hours = 15-20 Hours/Week (83)
6. What about sleeping?
Families--Seven Days x 1 Hour (76)
Eating--Seven Days x 2 Hours (62)
Hygiene--Seven Days x .5 Hours (Yes, this can vary wildly!) (58.5)
Girlfriend/Boyfriend/Friend Friends/Socializing/Facebook--Seven
Days x 2 Hours (This can vary wildly too!) (44.5)
TV/Videogames/Doing Nothing/Getting to school--Seven Days x
2 Hours (Do I need to write it again?) (30.5)
Sleeping?--Seven Days x ???
7. So, when are you going to sleep?
After all of this, you have 30.5 hours left to sleep per week... (4
hours, 20 minutes per night)
According to the experts you should be spending at least 56 hours
sleeping per week if not 70 hours per week... (8-10 hours per night)
We didn’t even count college apps/visits for seniors, taking care of
little brothers and sisters, hard core studying, hard core gaming,
raising animals, and anything else you do that’s not listed...
Is crunch time here before crunch time?
8. What do we do?
We need to make choices as we can’t do EVERYTHING ALL THE
TIME OUR VERY BEST
HOW DO WE DO IT?
WE NEED TO CHOOSE!
We need to know what is most important and what we most need
(like?) to do so we can make sure we have the best chance of
succeeding at what’s most important to us
We can’t get tripped up by stuff that’s less important
We can’t get jammed up just making the decision at crunch time
9. Make the Decisions Now
It’s August, it’s calm, it’s quiet
We can think clearly
Decide now what’s important, before you hit
crunch time and get jammed with all sorts of
demands on your time
Soon it won’t be August, calm, or quiet...
10. Start from the Top, Life
What’s most important in your life?
Think about it for real
Family, Faith, Friends?
List it out in a brainstorm
All the things you do
Talk to the people in your life to see what they think
Get an idea of what you do and how important it is
11. What’s most important in your life?
Go from there to school and “the other stuff ”
List them out and then rank them from most important to least
important
When two parts of your life compete for your time, which one will
you choose? The one that’s more important? Or??? How will you
know?
Which one NEEDS your attention? Which can accept less?
Make the decisions now while you can think clearly
12. Now, School...
Now do the same thing with your classes
Which is one is most important, which one is least
important
When you have two projects or tests in two different
classes, they’re both competing for your time and
attention
Which one needs an “A”? Which one can accept a lesser
grade? Or effort? Or time?
13. Keep in mind...
All of this is different for everybody
Very little of this is set in stone
But...
14. Keep in mind...
If you think of this now, you may save time and
anxiety, heartache, headache, and whatever else
may befall you during crunchtime...
Ever hear of the ant and the grasshopper?
In the end, do you get enough sleep or whatever
else is important?
