Our brief: How can LEGO co-create successful new products with its consumers?
What we did: We conducted stakeholder interviews and workshops and then co-designed, prototyped and
delivered a range of new open innovation pilots with kids, employees, and other brands.
What happened: The strategy was signed off by LEGO’s Board and is now being implemented across the
business, notably via LEGO Ideas, now the world’s largest crowdsourcing platform with 1 million members.

Sector: UK Government, Ministry of Defence
Our brief: How can the UK defence sector be more open and collaborative?
What we did: Our project ‘Opening the Door’ used stakeholder research and strategy workshops to prepare
the MOD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) for open innovation. We diagnosed MOD barriers
to open innovation, measured different aspects of the organisation’s readiness levels and designed a new
sector-wide system for collaboration.
What happened: OpenWorks created a UK defence open innovation blueprint that was accepted in full and is
now the subject of major upstream investment, up to £350m in the medium term. The blueprint helped the
MOD respond positively to a UK Government Strategic Defence Review and show how to network the nation’s
defence and promote UK growth via innovative SMEs and prime defence suppliers. 100%Open has since been
approached by a number of UK defence primes with a view to future partnerships.

Our brief: How can Barclaycard use open innovation to help reposition Barclays as the ‘Go-To Bank’?
What we did: We used internal and external stakeholder interviews, strategic analysis and desk research to
develop as open innovation blueprint for sourcing new mobile payment technologies for small businesses.
What happened: We concluded that open innovation could increase Barclaycard’s agility and relevance, and
that interesting new service providers might even be found within Barclaycard’s existing customer base. Our
recommendations were accepted in full and are helping to inform the future direction of Barclaycard.

bring together strong technical knowledge, expert facilitation, structured tools and design thinking. The
overall aim was to collaboratively develop new products and processes in response to major business needs.
What happened: These workshops have fostered new collaborations, bringing together R&D scientists, brand
teams and external experts from around the work to work together on new innovation opportunities. Several
new research projects and partnerships have been initiated.

Our brief: How can we change the way people connect with cars?
What we did: Microsoft and Nissan challenged MSN readers to submit a ground-breaking idea. A judging team
picked three contestants to take part in a two-day Jam workshop. Armed with selected tools from the
100%Open Innovation Toolkit, our team worked in collaboration alongside industry specialists from Nissan
and Microsoft to help the finalists hone their ideas into cutting-edge technologies for the motoring world.
What happened: After the workshop a website was created to enable the public to choose a winner to get a
trip to Seattle and San Diego to the visit Nissan and Microsoft’s R&D facilities. Aaron Daubney, a physics
student at St. Andrews University, won with his idea ‘The Time Machine’. Aaron’s concept was an interactive
artificial intelligence that optimises your time in the vehicle.

how people will move in the future.

Our brief: Can open innovation promote economic growth in Colombia?
What we did: On behalf of the Colombian Government 100%Open designed and ran a global open innovation
programme called CO4 for 11 major Colombian organisations, from ship-building and finance to white goods
and confectionery. 100%Open and local partners Enlace created and ran 31 challenges to find new
technologies and partners. CO4 included collaboration skills development for the Colombian companies and
the 100%Open airlock process to create mutual trust and viable partnerships.
What happened: Over the course of 18 months we used our communications team and Venture Radar service
to build a global network of potential partners. We ran 10 national launch events across Colombia and
publicised the challenges globally. Our Discovery Platform received nearly 400 high quality submissions from
Asia and Europe as well as across South America. Each of the 11 Colombian organisations forged one or more
valuable new partnerships with entrepreneurs or new suppliers and the country now has a thriving open
innovation sector.

crowd-source insights and ideas and develop prototypes.
What happened: In the first year RED Innovation grew to over 1,000 members in 127 countries. We ran 8

We meet up for an evening each quarter, hosted at a member’s HQ, in London and in Geneva. We have an
online community to keep the buzz going between meet-ups. To give you a flavour, recent events have taken
place at Google, Arup, Barclays and BBC in the UK and at Bacardi Martini, DuPont and CERN in Geneva. One of
the barriers to effective open innovation is the inability to meet enough interesting and different people in the
hurly-burly of corporate life. Union enables members to quickly source innovative technologies or new
