RSpace is an electronic lab notebook (ELN) developed as a spinout from the University of Edinburgh. It is designed to be flexible and support both molecular biology and chemistry workflows. Key features include flexibility in how users structure their work, connectivity to integrate with other tools and data sources, and traceability through unique IDs and linking of documents. The company is working with universities to enhance chemistry capabilities and integrate additional data types. A roadmap outlines upcoming sample management, Jupyter integration, and voice data ingestion features. RSpace aims to be secure, compliant, and deployable at research institutions globally.
2. About us
Spinout from the University of Edinburgh
Based in Edinburgh with office in Boston
RSpace was designed to requirements developed
with the University of Wisconsin
Subsequent development working with researchers
at Edinburgh, Goettingen, Harvard and elsewhere
3. What makes RSpace distinctive
Design fundamentals
o Flexibility
o Connectivity/interoperability/extensibility
o Traceability
o Support for molecular biology AND chemistry
Customer relationships
o Support
o Development
4. 1. Flexibility
“Other ELNs force you
into an often
constrictive workflow;
RSpace provides
support for enhancing
your workflow.”

Import AND/OR link to data
5. 2. The Connected Approach enables
inter-operability and supports reproducibility
7. 3. Traceability
Unique IDs for documents and forms
Linking between documents
Exports include linked documents
Integrations with data repositories
8. Molecular biology – SnapGene integration
Converting between file formats
Previewing DNA sequences
o Support for linear and circular modes
o Toggling b/n enzymes being showed or not
o Toggling b/n Open Reading Frames being showed or no
Displaying an enzymes table with configurable options based
on the enzyme sets
Converting a sequence to a Fasta string
Displaying n ORF (Open Reading Frames) table with
configurable options based on open reading frames
parameters
9. Chemistry
No modern, affordable ELN has good support for chemistry
We are working with Harvard Department of Chemistry and
Chemical Biology to change that!
Existing chemistry capabilities in RSpace (ChemAxon
partnership)
o Draw chemical structures
o Search structures and substructures
o Import Chemdraw files
o Import multiple compounds
o Calculations: weight, formula, mass
Coming enhancements
o Handling reactions
o Stoichiometry
Integrations with ChemAxon tools
o Assay data upload
o Compound registration
10. Roadmap
Chemistry further improvements ‘MVC’ (Q4 2020)
Sample management (Q3 2020)
o Upgrade and port eCAT sample management to RSpace
Jupyter integration (Nebraska) (Q3 2020)
Support for automatic ingest of
o Additional categories of instrument data, e.g.
sequencing data (ongoing)
o Voice data (HelixAI integration) (2021)
