2. Definition
• Copyright is a right given by the law to creators of literary,
dramatic, musical and artistic-works and producers of
cinematograph films and sound recordings.
• In fact, it is a bundle of rights including; rights of
reproduction, communication to the public, adaptation and
translation of the work.

3. Definition by WIPO
• Copyright is a legal term used to describe the rights that
creators have over their literary and artistic works.
• Works covered by copyright range from books, music,
paintings, sculpture, and films, to computer programs,
databases, advertisements, maps, and technical drawings.

4. Originality
• Originality in copyright is restricted to only skill, judgment
and labour in the context of compilation.

Rights
There are two types of rights under copyright:
1. Economic rights, which allow the rights owner to derive
financial reward from the use of his works by others; and
2. Moral rights, which protect the non-economic interests of
the author.

10. What is allowed?
• Does the law allow any use of a work without permission of
the owner of the copyright, and, if so, which are they?
• A fair deal for research, study, criticism, review and news
reporting, as well as use of works in library and schools and
in the legislatures, is permitted without specific permission
of the copyright owners.

11. Scope of protection in the Copyright Act,1957
• The act protects original literary, dramatic, musical and
artistic works and cinematograph films and sound
recordings from unauthorized uses.
• Unlike the case with patents, copyright protects the
expressions and not the ideas. There is no copyright in an
idea.
• The general rule is that copyright lasts for 60 years.
