4. Introduction
• It is secondary cell
I.e: It can be recharged by passing electric
current and used again and again. It is also
called as a storage cell(All the secondary cells
are storage cells)
• It has longer life than lead storage cell but
more expensive to manufacture

5. Construction
In this cell
• anode: Cd electrode
• Cathode: NiO2
• Electrolyte: 30 % KOH in distilled water

8. Working-Discharging
• Reaction at anode(Oxidation):
Cd + 2 OH- Cd(OH)2 + 2e-
• Reaction at Cathode(Reduction):
NiO2 + 2H2O + 2e- Ni(OH)2 + 2 OH-
• Net reaction during the discharge:
Cd + NiO2 + 2H2O Cd(OH)2 + Ni(OH)2 +
energy

9. Working-Charging
• Reaction at Cathode(Reduction):
Cd(OH)2 + 2e- Cd + 2 OH-
• Reaction at Anode(Oxidation):
Ni(OH)2 + 2 OH- NiO2 + 2H2O + 2e-
• Net reaction during the charging:
Cd(OH)2 + Ni(OH)2 + energy Cd +
NiO2 + 2H2O
