Why is farming important?
• Its important in many different ways.
• Provides food for a variety of people.
• Income (depending on plot size).
• Alternative supplies to aid life.
• Crop rotation
• Green Manure
• Compost
• Biological pest control
Organic Farming.
• Strong horses were used for farm work before tractors.
• The steam powered tractor introduced in 1868
• Henry Ford’s first tractor referred to as ‘automobile
plow’.
• He stopped making tractors in 1928
Agricultural revolution.
Reducing impacts on climate change.
Farmers are doing many things to reduce the effect
they have on climate change such as;
•Growing and selling local crops to the community.
•Keeping as little live stock for meat as possible.
•Scientist are working on putting hybrid technology
into tractors.
• The weather is a main part of farming and temperature
changes may alter crop growth.
• Crops grown in the south of the UK (warmer) will be able to
grown in the north.
• 20-30% of animals and crops at risk of extinction (1.5-2.5.C
change).
• Negative effects on crop growth due to droughts or floods.
Effects on farming.
Now; The future;
- Wheat
- Barley
- Rapeseed
- Potatoes
- Peas
- Maize
- Carrots
Phaselous bean, onion and sweet
corn are most likely to benefit
from the high temperatures
however fruit and vegetable
production may be affected
needing a new range of crops to
be selected.
UK Crops.
Climate;
•Temperature
•Rainfall
•Growing season
length
Factors effecting on farming.
Relief;
•Lowlands
•Steep slopes
•Temperature/height.
Addressing climate change.
• Carbon Farming.
• Returning to traditional methods.
• Government are changing policies.
• Reducing number of livestock kept.
• Managing water supplies
