2. General Information
• Down Syndrome is also known as Trisomy 21
• It is caused by the presence of an extra
chromosome 21 or part of an extra chromosome
21.
3. Symptoms
• Round face and a broad head, higher number of
ulnar loop dermatoglyphs, single flexion furrow
of the fifth finger, excessive space between the
big toe and second toe, and congenital heart
defects
4. Symptoms cont.
• Excessive joint laxity, Brushfield spots, short
neck, protruding tongue, single palmar fold, flat
nasal bridge, poor muscle tone, oblique eye
fissures, and IQ ranges from 10-70.
5. Incidence rates and prevention
• The incidence rates are 1
per 800 to 1 per 1000.
• If maternal age is 20-24
the chances are 1 in 1562.
Age 35-39 chances are 1
in 214. Age 45 and above
is 1 in 19.
• There is no real
prevention or treatment
for Down Syndrome.
• Life expectancy is 49
years.
6. Testing and Help
• Some tests you can get to see if
your child has Down
Syndrome are chorionic villus
sampling, amniocentesis, and
percutaneous umbilical cord
blood sampling.
• The National Down Syndrome
Society helps children with
Down Syndrome. Any
children’s hospital or mental
health hospital would also
provide extra care.
