Making YourHeart A Tablet,[object Object],Exodus 19,[object Object]
Ecclesiastes 12:9-10 NIV,[object Object],Not only was the Teacher wise, but also he imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.,[object Object]
Ecclesiastes12:13-14 NIV,[object Object],Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.,[object Object]
Why does our culture have such an aversion to the Ten Commandments?,[object Object]
Three reasons we don’t like them,[object Object],Psalms 119:127-128 NIV ,[object Object],Because I love your ,[object Object],commands more than ,[object Object],gold, more than pure ,[object Object],gold, and because ,[object Object],I consider all your ,[object Object],precepts right, I hate ,[object Object],every wrong path.,[object Object]
Three reasons we don’t like them,[object Object],Proverbs 14:12 NIV ,[object Object],There is a way that ,[object Object],seems right to a man, ,[object Object],but in the end ,[object Object],it leads to death.,[object Object]
Three reasons we don’t like them,[object Object],Talmud said there were,[object Object],613 commands,[object Object],248 were positive,[object Object],365 were negative,[object Object]
Why study the Ten Commandments?,[object Object]
A sound way to a sound life,[object Object],Pattern for civilization’s laws,[object Object]
Deuteronomy 4:5-9 NIV,[object Object],See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, ,[object Object]
Deuteronomy 4:5-9 NIV,[object Object],"Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? ,[object Object]
Deuteronomy 4:5-9 NIV,[object Object],Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.,[object Object]
A sound way to a sound life,[object Object],Pattern for civilization’s laws,[object Object],Even pagans know the basic rightness,[object Object]
Romans 2:14-15 NIV,[object Object],Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.,[object Object]
A sound way to a sound life,[object Object],Pattern for civilization’s laws,[object Object],Even pagans know the basic rightness,[object Object],Jesus used as a guide to pleasing God,[object Object]
Matthew 5:17-20 NIV,[object Object],"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.,[object Object]
Matthew 5:17-20 NIV,[object Object],Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.,[object Object]
Matthew 5:17-20 NIV,[object Object],For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.,[object Object]
Matthew 5:21-22 NIV ,[object Object],"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.'But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, ' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.,[object Object]
Matthew 5:27-28 NIV ,[object Object],"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.,[object Object]
How do you make your heart a tablet?,[object Object]
Exodus 19:3-9 NIV,[object Object],Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. ,[object Object]
Exodus 19:3-9 NIV,[object Object],Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.",[object Object]
Exodus 19:3-9 NIV,[object Object],So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded him to speak. The people all responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. ,[object Object]
Exodus 19:3-9 NIV,[object Object],The LORD said to Moses, "I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you." Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said.,[object Object]
Exodus 19:10-12 NIV,[object Object],And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready by the third day, because on that day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.,[object Object]
Exodus 19:10-12 NIV ,[object Object],Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, 'Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death.,[object Object]
Exodus 19:20-22 NIV,[object Object],The LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up and the LORD said to him, "Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the LORD and many of them perish. Even the priests, who approach the LORD, must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out against them.",[object Object]

James 1:21 NIV,[object Object],Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.,[object Object]

Hinweis der Redaktion

If you could boil down the entire Bible to one statement, wouldn't this be it?Note: in Heb. the word "duty" is not in the text. Hence "The man who fears God and keeps his commandments is the whole man.“Contrast with moral vagueness of our dayPeople are doing wrong and don’t have a concept of what is right.Popular notion that no one has the right to impose moral standards, e.g. “You don’t have the right to tell us what is right.”
  3. Society thinks it has outgrown the 10 Commandments.Captain of ship left the bridge in the control of a young pilot. Told him to keep his eye on the North Star. Later, got a panicked call from the pilot, “We're in trouble! I've sailed past the North Star!”You don't sail past the commands of God.
  4. Three Reasons we have trouble with the Ten Commandments:Our culture has no room for absolutes. The Bible says there are things that are right and things that are wrong. We get a bad reputation for not taking the Old Testament seriously. Two thirds of God’s revelation falls between Genesis and Malachi, so we should spend a sizable part of our study in the Old Testament. Our culture doesn’t take the Old Testament seriously. Today we think everything is relative. 10 commands were okay for ancient nomads, but not for the Internet age.Not ten suggestions, but ten commandments
  5. 2. Society sees an irreconcilable tension between love and lawAssumes there are times when love requires breaking law“Whatever I want is what is right”Situation ethics overestimates man & underestimates GodProverbs 14:12 NBLH Hay camino que al hombre le parece derecho, Pero al final, es camino de muerte.Situation ethics teaches there are times when loving thing is to steal (e.g. for food), lie (e.g. avoid hurting feelings), & commit adultery (e.g. I really love her/him) Situation ethics takes scriptures out of context to make powerful argumentsBottom line of situation ethics: "Whatever I want is what is right"God didn’t leave it to us to determine what is right; He left us to do what is right!
  6. 3. Our culture has no room for negativesWe who take God’s commands seriously are called fanatics & legalistsAccording to Talmud, there were 613 commands; 248 positive & 365 negative.Even positives were sometimes negative (e.g. positive command to punish perjury with the penalty intended for the accused)Limitations not always confining. Sometimes liberating (e.g. “Don’t play in the street” and “Don’t put your hand in the fan”)10 commands not demands barked by a capricious staff sergeant, but limits of love set by the Father for his children. When you break the commands, you really break yourself.
  7. The Decalogue is the pattern for civilization's lawsEvery body of law in the civilized world has its roots in the ten commandsMoses said as much:
  9. Even pagans know the basic rightness of the commands
  11. Jesus used the commands as a guide to a life pleasing God.He began the body of his sermon on the Mount with a restatement of the importance of the 10 commands.
  13. Jesus didn't make the commands irrelevant.Rather, he restated and refined them to show their true relevance. "You have heard ... but I say to you...”
  15. If adultery is wrong, then dwelling on adulterous thoughts is wrongMatthew 5:27-28 NBLH "Ustedes han oído que se dijo: 'NO COMETERAS ADULTERIO.'
  16. People have to get their hearts ready for revelationCecil B DeMille got it wrong in the movie:Not first given to Moses on tablets of stoneFirst given orally to the people by God’s voice while Moses was still with them at the foot of the mountainGod spent three days preparing the people before he ever uttered a commandThere are requirements for revelationAre you ready to receive the message?
  18. It makes a world of difference how you hear the CommandmentsGod wants to know whether we are listening to receive and obeyAre you ready to clean up your life?
  20. God doesn’t write on dirty tabletsHe doesn’t say “I’ll give you the word so you can clean up your life”Rather, “Clean up your life so God can give you the word”Are you really ready to respect God’s presence?
  22. Every week, some receive something helpful; others just go away boredThe difference may be: were you eager to receive God’s word? Or were you just going through the motions of coming to church?
  23. Sin dulls our ability to hearWe must first clean up our lives, then God can speak to us
Gk. ruparia- "moral filth" - is literally "ear wax"The picture is that it clogs our ears and keeps us from hearing GodThe 10 Commandments are personal, not generalHebrew “you” in the 10 Commandments is singular, not pluralGod is not talking to the congregation in general, but he is talking individually to Moses, Aaron, Miriam, Korah, Dathan, Abiram, etc.Likewise, today, God’s commandments are personal to each of usWe need to read them that way: “ God is talking to me!”
  25. The 10 Commandments were not given flippantlyExodus 19 shows a pattern designed to produce awe and respectIt is a sin to receive them lightlyFor the rest of this series we should show reverent, respectful attention. This is God’s law.
  26. Have you heard from God lately? If not, it’s not because he has nothing to sayPrayer: May we approach the ten commands with reverence. May we reflect on our lives and be ready to receive their message. May we respect the limits your love has placed on us. Help us personally prepare for your law.
