Committed to continuing education and honing his business skills, Paul Katsus is actively involved with industry organizations and with Toastmasters International. What began as a speaking club at the YMCA in Bloomington, Illinois, in 1905 as an effort to teach men public speaking, meeting, and committee skills is now the world-renowned nonprofit educational organization known as Toastmasters International. Officially created by Ralph C. Smedley in Santa Ana, California, in 1924 (19 years after the first unofficial meeting), Toastmasters today has more than 345,000 members and 15,900 clubs, and can be found in 142 countries. In 1928, Smedley trademarked the name Toastmasters Club, and by 1930, almost 30 clubs had been formed, including one in Canada. To reflect the club’s presence outside of the United States, it was renamed Toastmasters International, and in 1932, the organization was incorporated in California as a nonprofit. The organization operated out of a series of temporary office spaces in Southern California until 1962, when the staff was permanently relocated to the first World Headquarters building, in Santa Ana.
