This was a presentation that I did at the recent EduTech 2013 Corporate and Government Learning Congress. It looks at the need for organisations to capture the informal learning activities of their staff as a method of showing competency in staff.

⢠238 sites across QLD

3. Informal Learning;
⢠Learning that is not organised or structured in terms of goals, time or
instruction. This covers skills acquired (sometimes unintentionally) through
life and work experience
Non-Formal Learning;
⢠learning outside the formal school/vocational training/university system,
taking place through planned activities (e.g. with goals and timelines)
involving some form of learning support
Informal and Non-formal
Learning
4. ⢠Does not necessarily happen in the
workplace;
⢠Does not result in a âqualificationâ;
⢠Often happens on demand;
⢠May not be directly related to job role
Informal Learning
5. Are you Qualified?
There is no formal assessment with informal
learning, so;
⢠How can you show you have learnt;
⢠Transference of learning across
workplaces is difficult;
⢠How can you show you are competent.
6. Capturing Informal Learning
Organisations need to capture informal
learning
⢠PD requirements
