MicroART: A Software Architecture Recovery Tool for Maintaining Microservice-based Systems

6th of April 2017. My presentation done at the 14th International Conference on Software Architecture (ICSA), Tool Papers, Gothenburg, Sweden. Microservice-based systems are characterised by a multitude of small services, each running in its own process and communicating with lightweight mechanisms. The microservice architectural style strongly encourages high decoupling among microservices in order to ease their independent deployment, operation, and maintenance. However, there are situations in which having a global overview of the system is fundamental. In this paper we present the first prototype of our Architecture Recovery Tool for microservice-based systems called MicroART. MicroART following Model-Driven Engineering principles, is able to generate models of the software architecture of a microservice-based system, that can be managed by software architects for multiple purposes. Microservice Architectures — which are the norm in some domains — have recently received lots of attentions in general computing and are becoming the mainstream architectural style to develop distributed systems. This presentation was presented at IEEE Conference 2014 - 5th International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS). Summary of my final year project : 3D building models is extremely helpful throughout the architecture engineering and construction (AEC) lifecycle. Such models coupled with virtual walk through can enable customers to decide and be satisfied with their dream building. Manually creating a polygonal 3D model of a set of floor plans is nontrivial and requires skill and time. This project introduces and reviews a mechanism for applying interior and exterior design constructs after the conversion of 2D drawings into 3D Building Information Model (BIM).This research demonstrates an automated 3D model reconstruction of real world object from an un-calibrated image sequence targeting the same scene; which can be used for interior and exterior design. There are many key techniques in 3D reconstruction from image sequences, including feature matching, fundamental matrix estimation, projective reconstruction, camera self-calibration, dense stereo matching and Euclidean reconstruction.

Microservice Architecture (MSA) is an approach to the realization of software architectures that aims to foster scalability, maintainability, and robustness. To this end, MSA proposes architecture decomposition into microservices, i.e., software components that (i) provide distinct capabilities; (ii) are as independent as possible from other components; and (iii) are solely responsible for their interactions with other components. However, when compared to monolithic software systems, the adoption of MSA usually results in a significant complexity increase concerning architecture design, development, and operation. In our current line of research, we pursue the goal to mitigate this complexity by investigating the application of Model-driven Engineering (MDE) to MSA engineering and introducing supportive abstractions to certain activities of the latter. In our webinar talk, we will (i) motivate our research on MDE for MSA; (ii) present an ecosystem of modeling languages, which aims to enable stakeholders in MSA engineering to express their specific concerns towards a microservice architecture in a concise and efficient manner; (iii) demonstrate the ecosystem’s practical applicability; and (iv) summarize the most recent insights from our ongoing research. In addition, we will give an outlook on potential future research activities, including both the reconstruction and collaborative specification of microservice architectures in a model-driven fashion.
