MARCH 2015
BEING TRANSPARENT WITH GOD
By Pastor Dave
If you had a glass jar without
a lid, and you could look
around in there and see its
contents. Transparency is a
wonderful thing. It has great
advantages.
Years ago the hot thing was Gerber Baby
Food jars down in the Man-Cave, also known as
the Home Workshop. You would get some clean
used jars, screw the lid to
a board and fill the
jars with various nuts,
bolts, washers and the
like. You could see what
was in each one of
them. You could shake out the contents one
piece at a time. If it was a screw, you could lean
that jar over and watch one of those little
fasteners wiggle its way to the lip of
the jar and drop into your palm.
Slick as can be. Yes sir!
Everyone likes glass jars,
like for jam and jelly. You can see
inside and know what is left.
Kids like glass jars for catching bugs.
Now there is a memory. Hold on, a few months
to go before you can catch those fireflies again.
Pure wonder, that’s what that is!
In the near future, we will
be covering the truth that God
knows our hearts, our minds,
the very words we are about to
speak before we say them. To
Him, our minds are like glass jars. He can look
right in there and see what is going on in our
hearts and minds. He can see when a word is
about to spill out from the edge of our tongue! In
other words, our thoughts, motives, hopes,
expectations, opinions and the like, well, they
are clearly visible to him.
You might say, we are transparent to
Him. Now, that might make you feel
uncomfortable. When privacy and security are
rare, we protect it. We have firewalls and
padlocks; passwords and passcodes; we have
fences and alarms; we have remote security
devices and keyless entry systems.
To someone 100 years ago, we look like
we live in a whole lot of fear. There is nothing to
fear knowing God can transparently see into our
hearts and minds. That is, unless we have
something to hide.
But in fact, there is no hiding. Adam and
Eve tried that and it did not go so well for them.
God knew they were in the bushes before He
asked. So, if He knows your thoughts, why not
talk to Him? He’s right there anyway. Tell him
your worries, even though He already knows
them. You will feel better knowing He knows too.
And why not make a short list of things
you would like Him to help you with, or just plain
give you. Go ahead ask. Ask every day. He
probably won’t hand them to you, He will
probably work with you to learn them. Oh, we
don’t mean things with handles [you know,
tangible things, like motorhomes and “stuff”]. Try
asking for things without handles like, oh, say,
generosity, or patience, or self-control or the
ability to oversee your affairs better
[administration].
Our Saviour’s Voice
2
Consider talking with Him about those
things throughout the day. Watch, He might just
put you in a position to put them into practice, to
polish them as a skill.
Oh yes, did you know you can pray with
your eyes open? Yes, you sure can. Jesus did it,
“When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted
up his eyes to heaven, and said, ‘Father, the
hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son
may glorify you
’” John 17:1. Wowsers!
One of my favorite scenes in the film,
“Fiddler on the Roof” is
when the dad, Topol,
stops his cart, sets it
down, looks up to the
sky and starts talking
to God, right out loud!
That’s faith! Topol was
transparent with God because he knew God was
transparent with him.
We have all met folks who talk a lot. Are
we familiar with folks who like to listen a lot?
They do exist, God is one of them. He is always
listening. And He wants us to do the talking.
Yup, He does. Look at this teeny tiny
verse about talking a lot to God, “Pray without
ceasing.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:17.
That just means, “Keep on talking - I am
listening.”
Are you transparent with God? Actually,
we are. Just forget that He can look inside us
and see everything. That is a blessing, not
something to be fearful of.
God bless your toes!

‱ You will probably get this newsletter by March 1.
‱ Lent will have already begun.
‱ March 1 to April 5 [Easter] is 36 days.
‱ There are 21 chapters in the Gospel of John.
‱ If you read a little over a chapter a day of John, from March 1
to April 5, you will have completed one account of the life of
Christ.
‱ You will be equipped for Easter.
‱ Passion week will mean more to you.
‱ The Good Friday event will captivate and stir you deeper.
‱ Easter will be brighter and more meaningful.
‱ Is there any reason not to read 1+ chapters a day of the Gospel of John starting on March 1?

THE FAMILY PROJECT –
COMING TO OSLC THIS SUMMER
Why do families work? Because God Himself designed them! Thriving families
will lead to thriving communities, and thriving communities will transform the
world. People will find purpose, joy and redemption; and generation after generation will create a positive legacy.
The Family Project is a 12 session DVD experience for couples or small groups that explores the theological,
philosophical, and cultural underpinnings of the traditional family, and combines that information with inspiring
stories and practical tools to help 21st-century families thrive.
The Family Project also offers a hope-filled, optimistic antidote to the current landscape of familial breakdown,
sending a clear message that a return to the time-tested, historical model of the family is where so many of our
culture’s wounds begin to heal. It’s designed to develop a new appreciation for why family matters
based on a
bigger understanding of who God is in His character and why He created humanity the way He did. Equipped
with this information, viewers will also be exposed to a wealth of hands-on tools and resources to help them
embrace those values within their own families and pass them along to future generations.
This course will take place at OSLC during the week of June 22-26. The class will meet in the evenings from
5:30-8:30pm. Watch for more information. Call ahead to the church office (468-4065) to reserve your seat!

4. Don’t work against yourself
5. See yourself from a distance
6. Instantly switch your thinking
7. Stretch yourself
Suggested reading (but not needed):
The Book of Job
“Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl
“Prisoners of our Thoughts” by Alex Pattakos
“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone
has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little
children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:16-18

  • 1. 1 Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 120 S. Henry Street, Green Bay, Wisconsin, 54302 (920) 468-4065 MARCH 2015 BEING TRANSPARENT WITH GOD By Pastor Dave If you had a glass jar without a lid, and you could look around in there and see its contents. Transparency is a wonderful thing. It has great advantages. Years ago the hot thing was Gerber Baby Food jars down in the Man-Cave, also known as the Home Workshop. You would get some clean used jars, screw the lid to a board and fill the jars with various nuts, bolts, washers and the like. You could see what was in each one of them. You could shake out the contents one piece at a time. If it was a screw, you could lean that jar over and watch one of those little fasteners wiggle its way to the lip of the jar and drop into your palm. Slick as can be. Yes sir! Everyone likes glass jars, like for jam and jelly. You can see inside and know what is left. Kids like glass jars for catching bugs. Now there is a memory. Hold on, a few months to go before you can catch those fireflies again. Pure wonder, that’s what that is! In the near future, we will be covering the truth that God knows our hearts, our minds, the very words we are about to speak before we say them. To Him, our minds are like glass jars. He can look right in there and see what is going on in our hearts and minds. He can see when a word is about to spill out from the edge of our tongue! In other words, our thoughts, motives, hopes, expectations, opinions and the like, well, they are clearly visible to him. You might say, we are transparent to Him. Now, that might make you feel uncomfortable. When privacy and security are rare, we protect it. We have firewalls and padlocks; passwords and passcodes; we have fences and alarms; we have remote security devices and keyless entry systems. To someone 100 years ago, we look like we live in a whole lot of fear. There is nothing to fear knowing God can transparently see into our hearts and minds. That is, unless we have something to hide. But in fact, there is no hiding. Adam and Eve tried that and it did not go so well for them. God knew they were in the bushes before He asked. So, if He knows your thoughts, why not talk to Him? He’s right there anyway. Tell him your worries, even though He already knows them. You will feel better knowing He knows too. And why not make a short list of things you would like Him to help you with, or just plain give you. Go ahead ask. Ask every day. He probably won’t hand them to you, He will probably work with you to learn them. Oh, we don’t mean things with handles [you know, tangible things, like motorhomes and “stuff”]. Try asking for things without handles like, oh, say, generosity, or patience, or self-control or the ability to oversee your affairs better [administration]. Our Saviour’s Voice
  • 2. 2 Consider talking with Him about those things throughout the day. Watch, He might just put you in a position to put them into practice, to polish them as a skill. Oh yes, did you know you can pray with your eyes open? Yes, you sure can. Jesus did it, “When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you
’” John 17:1. Wowsers! One of my favorite scenes in the film, “Fiddler on the Roof” is when the dad, Topol, stops his cart, sets it down, looks up to the sky and starts talking to God, right out loud! That’s faith! Topol was transparent with God because he knew God was transparent with him. We have all met folks who talk a lot. Are we familiar with folks who like to listen a lot? They do exist, God is one of them. He is always listening. And He wants us to do the talking. Yup, He does. Look at this teeny tiny verse about talking a lot to God, “Pray without ceasing.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:17. That just means, “Keep on talking - I am listening.” Are you transparent with God? Actually, we are. Just forget that He can look inside us and see everything. That is a blessing, not something to be fearful of. God bless your toes! • 3. 3 THE FAMILY PROJECT – COMING TO OSLC THIS SUMMER Why do families work? Because God Himself designed them! Thriving families will lead to thriving communities, and thriving communities will transform the world. People will find purpose, joy and redemption; and generation after generation will create a positive legacy. The Family Project is a 12 session DVD experience for couples or small groups that explores the theological, philosophical, and cultural underpinnings of the traditional family, and combines that information with inspiring stories and practical tools to help 21st-century families thrive. The Family Project also offers a hope-filled, optimistic antidote to the current landscape of familial breakdown, sending a clear message that a return to the time-tested, historical model of the family is where so many of our culture’s wounds begin to heal. It’s designed to develop a new appreciation for why family matters
based on a bigger understanding of who God is in His character and why He created humanity the way He did. Equipped with this information, viewers will also be exposed to a wealth of hands-on tools and resources to help them embrace those values within their own families and pass them along to future generations. This course will take place at OSLC during the week of June 22-26. The class will meet in the evenings from 5:30-8:30pm. Watch for more information. Call ahead to the church office (468-4065) to reserve your seat! Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:16-18 40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion.
