The document discusses different approaches to understanding the concept of God. It examines theological proofs and attributes like immutability and examines the biblical portrayal of God found in Jesus. It argues that Jesus and God are one in purpose and essence, with God defined as love. It addresses the Trinity as a baffling but biblically-based aspect of God stemming from his saving activity. It also argues that if God is love, he must have always experienced love within himself through the interaction of the Trinity. It aims to reconcile God's power and sovereignty with his being defined as love.

Reign of god chp 3
1. The existence of God is the fundamental question of religion. Theologians attempts to answer this question through philosophical proofs , they examine divine attributes such as Immutability, omnipresence, eternity seeking to clear away peoples objections to God and assemble a doctrine in their place. The author supports another approach one that does not obscure the biblical portrait of God, that of examination of the biblical portrayal of God.
The author points out that as Christians our fundamental concept of God must be informed by what we find in Jesus. Jesus is God, God is Jesus. This statement shows the sameness not only of purpose between God the father and God the son but their absolute oneness. God’s relation to Jesus says the author identifies him as God.
God is Love; this statement can be viewed as a definition of God, not an Affection to be displayed but the essence of God’s nature.
The concept of the trinity is according to the author the most baffling aspect of the Christian doctrine of God, due to its semblance to polytheism. Some say the author treat the question of the trinity as an intellectual puzzle, when in fact it’s basis lies in God’s saving activity.
The author makes the logical argument that love is inherently social, as such if god is love then he must have always had an object for his devotion, he must have experienced love within himself from all eternity through the interaction of the Trinity.
Gods sovereignty points to great power, power dominates and often destroys, which the author points out may seem to be at odds with the statement “God is Love “. By way of clarification he argues that love being the ultimate source of all of Gods qualities must also be the source of his power, that he has great powers because he has great love. He is the maker of heaven and earth and expression of both his power and his love.
Whatever is not God was created by God and owes its existence to God, the author in making this statement concretize the oneness on God while disproving Idolatry which he says brings God down to the level of the creature. Holiness is defined by the author as “the quality of being utterly different from ordinary things”. The holiness of God represents another feature of the biblical portrait of God.
God’s names are Elohim and Yahweh, the disclosure of his names is seen as God’s attempt to express himself in human history to give us himself.
