I remember my mentor, Dr. J. Miles Acker Jr. telling a story on himself.  It
seems he found an old sermon in his preaching Bible as he was preparing
to preach one Sunday.  While the offering was being taken he read through
it quickly.  On page three he came to a place underlined in red and written
in the margins in bold letters were the words “argument is weak here, yell
like hell and pound the pulpit.”  I always doubted the truthfulness because
Miles was a fine preacher and his arguments were rock solid.
Psalm 5 is a prayer sometimes called a lament for deliverance from
personal enemies.  It begins almost softly with the words, “Give ear to my
words, O Lord; Give heed to my groaning, hearken to the sound of my
cry.”  The author builds in urgency saying in verse four, “For thou art not a
God who delights in wickedness; evil may not sojourn with thee.”  In verse
nine the argument becomes intense, one can fairly feel the tension in the
plea.  “For there is no truth in the mouth of my enemies, their heart is
destruction, their throat an open grave, they flatter with their tongue.” The
Psalmist goes on to say how the work of enemies keeps them apart from
God.  This of course is so true.  Any seasoned person of faith knows all too
well those times and places where we have distanced ourselves from God
through thought or deed.   Hence the Psalm writer needs to write this
plaintive song. The Psalm ends in part with the words, “Let all who take
refuge in thee rejoice, let them sing ever for joy...”
There is a beautiful poem titled, “Footprints In the Sand.”  For years it was
not attributed, however, recently I was given a framed copy and noted the
author is Mary Stevenson.  The poem is about walking along the beach in
a dream, side by side with God, and seeing two sets of footprints.
However, at the most difficult junctures of life there are only one set of
footprints.  The author confronts God saying, “You said if I follow you,
you would be with me always, so why at the difficult times only one set of
footprints?”  God’s response is, “My child at those most difficult times I
carried you.” Another thought on relational theology can be found in the
words and music of Terry Butler in a piece of music based on Psalm 25.
“Teach me your holy ways O Lord, so I can walk in your truth.  Teach me
you holy ways O Lord and make me wholly devoted to you.”  The refrain
is “It is the cry of my heart to follow you.  It is the cry of my heart to be
close to you.  It is the cry of my heart to follow you all of the days of my
life.”  Whether those words are whispered, whistled, or sung out full, it is
the content and hearts intent not the volume which makes all the
difference.

INCREASE YOUR PLEDGE IN 2016!
BOY SCOUT TROOP 18
BY Jim Doggett
The Boy Scouts of America is a national non-profit
corporation, chartered by the U. S. Congress. It also
operates four High Adventure camping facilities and
has a National Scout Jamboree every four years. Its
policies are set by lay delegates from throughout the
country which meet annually. The Scouting program is
facilitated through Scout Councils in geographical
areas. Our council is the Western Los Angeles County
Council, covering the San Fernando, Santa Clarita
and Antelope Valleys and the Santa Monica, Culver
City and other west side communities. Each council’s
policies and operations are controlled by an Executive
Board of community leaders and representatives of
units.
A Scouting unit is not a part of the Boy Scout
organization. It is a part of the sponsoring
organization, now termed a “chartered partner.” The
organization, in our case, FUMC of North
Hollywood, annually receives a charter from the
Council authorizing it to use the Scouting program as
part of its own youth program. How this is done is up
to the organization, as long as the method is within the
principles of Scouting and the guidelines of the
charter. In order to regulate the program, each boy
member and adult leader must register as a member of
the Boy Scouts and each leader must receive Youth
Protection training every two years. In exchange for
the rights to use the Scouting program, uniform and
identity, and other benefits, the sponsor agrees to
provide adequate leadership, including a Scoutmaster,
a troop committee of adults, and a safe and adequate
meeting place. Coordination between the unit and the
sponsor is handled by a Chartered Partner
Representative, who also is a member of the council
executive board. In the case of Troop 18, the CPR is
Kathi Ellis.
The national United Methodist Conference recognizes
the Boy Scouts as one of five national youth
organizations whose units may be sponsored by the
local church as part of its youth ministry and outreach
to the community.
WE NEED FRESH FRUIT
Want to donate fruit? NHIFP and Food Forward are
continuing a growing partnership. If you have a
fruit tree and are interested in having your excess
crop harvested by Food Forward, the process is easy.
To get started you can register your fruit tree via
their website: www.foodforward.org or call them at
818-764-1022 x 0#. The produce will be donated to
the NHIFP and you receive a tax-deductible receipt
for your donation.
Food forward is a partner with NHIFP that provides
fresh fruit for the pantry clients. Harvest Teams,
lead by a pick leader, harvest fruit from trees
registered with Food Forward in local parks and
residential backyards. The role of the pick leader is
to coordinate the date and time of harvest, guide
the volunteers participating in the harvest team on
how to safely pick the fruit, help coordinate
volunteers and transport all fruit picked and
necessary equipment to and from the property. This
is done with the help of Food Forward’s LA Harvest
Coordinator. Pick leaders will have access to all
required equipment (fruit pickers, ladders, boxes)
and use of Food Forward vehicles (if desired) which
are located at their offices in North Hollywood.
Pick leaders undergo a short training and will be
supported by both the Pantry and Food Forward. If
you are interested in becoming a pick leader, email
the director of NHIFP, Luis Oliart (luis@fccnh.org).
It’s a rewarding volunteer opportunity that
immensely helps the Pantry and our clients.
Thanks for your help.

Reflections
! Joey K. "Donald
Reflections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from May 1, 2016 and
Dr. McDonald’s sermon was titled “A Muppet Blessing” based on Psalm 67.
Psalm 67 begins “Let God grant us grace and bless us.”  The Psalm ends seven verses later
with the words, “Let God continue to bless us; let the far ends of earth honor God.”  The lyric
of the Psalm is a brief yet powerful instructive of what it means to bless and the power of
kindness.
We live in a time and place of instant communication, and as we know, especially in an
election year. Rarely do political opponents have anything good to say about one another.  No
news there, however, the other day I experienced a new low when one politico mocked the
eating habits of an opponent.  With this in mind it might not hurt if every person who runs for
office, be it dogcatcher or president, be required to memorize the poem “Apparent Failure” by
Robert Browning.  “It is wiser to be good than bad, It is safer to be meek than fierce, It is fitter
being sane than mad.  My own hope is, a sun will pierce the thickest cloud earth ever stretched;
That, after last, returns the first, though a wide compass round be fetched; That what began
best can’t end worst, Nor what God blessed once, prove accursed.” 1864
In a time when internet blogs are built for the sole purpose of denigrating people and thought
we are not in agreement with, imagine what a kind word or thought might do.  Eighteenth
century English chemist, Sir Humphrey Davy, wrote about the power of little things making a
big difference when he penned the following.  “Life is made up, not of Great Sacrifices of
duties, but of little things, in which Smiles and Kindnesses and small obligations, given
habitually, are what Win and Preserve the Heart and Secure Comfort.”  It seems worthy of
thought to consider being thankful, kind, and cheerful, healthy habits for the heart.

First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood Newsletter

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@pacbell.net June 2016 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.com IN THIS ISSUE: • Choir Recognition • Vacation Bible School • UMW Membership Tea • Care Kits for Homeless GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Minerva Carcaño Bishop Rev. James Powell District Superintendent Dr. Joey K. McDonald Pastor Congregation Ministers Jeff Thomas Director of Music Roger Eshleman Organist Nylean Rapinac Administrator Patty Kelsey Director, Program Ministries Jessica Renslow Director, Outreach Ministries I remember my mentor, Dr. J. Miles Acker Jr. telling a story on himself.  It seems he found an old sermon in his preaching Bible as he was preparing to preach one Sunday.  While the offering was being taken he read through it quickly.  On page three he came to a place underlined in red and written in the margins in bold letters were the words “argument is weak here, yell like hell and pound the pulpit.”  I always doubted the truthfulness because Miles was a fine preacher and his arguments were rock solid.    Psalm 5 is a prayer sometimes called a lament for deliverance from personal enemies.  It begins almost softly with the words, “Give ear to my words, O Lord; Give heed to my groaning, hearken to the sound of my cry.”  The author builds in urgency saying in verse four, “For thou art not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not sojourn with thee.”  In verse nine the argument becomes intense, one can fairly feel the tension in the plea.  “For there is no truth in the mouth of my enemies, their heart is destruction, their throat an open grave, they flatter with their tongue.” The Psalmist goes on to say how the work of enemies keeps them apart from God.  This of course is so true.  Any seasoned person of faith knows all too well those times and places where we have distanced ourselves from God through thought or deed.   Hence the Psalm writer needs to write this plaintive song. The Psalm ends in part with the words, “Let all who take refuge in thee rejoice, let them sing ever for joy...”   There is a beautiful poem titled, “Footprints In the Sand.”  For years it was not attributed, however, recently I was given a framed copy and noted the author is Mary Stevenson.  The poem is about walking along the beach in a dream, side by side with God, and seeing two sets of footprints.  However, at the most difficult junctures of life there are only one set of footprints.  The author confronts God saying, “You said if I follow you, you would be with me always, so why at the difficult times only one set of footprints?”  God’s response is, “My child at those most difficult times I carried you.” Another thought on relational theology can be found in the words and music of Terry Butler in a piece of music based on Psalm 25.  “Teach me your holy ways O Lord, so I can walk in your truth.  Teach me you holy ways O Lord and make me wholly devoted to you.”  The refrain is “It is the cry of my heart to follow you.  It is the cry of my heart to be close to you.  It is the cry of my heart to follow you all of the days of my life.”  Whether those words are whispered, whistled, or sung out full, it is the content and hearts intent not the volume which makes all the difference. A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOEY Your Friend and Pastor, Joey

  • 6. BOY SCOUT TROOP 18 BY Jim Doggett The Boy Scouts of America is a national non-profit corporation, chartered by the U. S. Congress. It also operates four High Adventure camping facilities and has a National Scout Jamboree every four years. Its policies are set by lay delegates from throughout the country which meet annually. The Scouting program is facilitated through Scout Councils in geographical areas. Our council is the Western Los Angeles County Council, covering the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys and the Santa Monica, Culver City and other west side communities. Each council’s policies and operations are controlled by an Executive Board of community leaders and representatives of units. A Scouting unit is not a part of the Boy Scout organization. It is a part of the sponsoring organization, now termed a “chartered partner.” The organization, in our case, FUMC of North Hollywood, annually receives a charter from the Council authorizing it to use the Scouting program as part of its own youth program. How this is done is up to the organization, as long as the method is within the principles of Scouting and the guidelines of the charter. In order to regulate the program, each boy member and adult leader must register as a member of the Boy Scouts and each leader must receive Youth Protection training every two years. In exchange for the rights to use the Scouting program, uniform and identity, and other benefits, the sponsor agrees to provide adequate leadership, including a Scoutmaster, a troop committee of adults, and a safe and adequate meeting place. Coordination between the unit and the sponsor is handled by a Chartered Partner Representative, who also is a member of the council executive board. In the case of Troop 18, the CPR is Kathi Ellis. The national United Methodist Conference recognizes the Boy Scouts as one of five national youth organizations whose units may be sponsored by the local church as part of its youth ministry and outreach to the community. WE NEED FRESH FRUIT Want to donate fruit? NHIFP and Food Forward are continuing a growing partnership. If you have a fruit tree and are interested in having your excess crop harvested by Food Forward, the process is easy. To get started you can register your fruit tree via their website: www.foodforward.org or call them at 818-764-1022 x 0#. The produce will be donated to the NHIFP and you receive a tax-deductible receipt for your donation. Food forward is a partner with NHIFP that provides fresh fruit for the pantry clients. Harvest Teams, lead by a pick leader, harvest fruit from trees registered with Food Forward in local parks and residential backyards. The role of the pick leader is to coordinate the date and time of harvest, guide the volunteers participating in the harvest team on how to safely pick the fruit, help coordinate volunteers and transport all fruit picked and necessary equipment to and from the property. This is done with the help of Food Forward’s LA Harvest Coordinator. Pick leaders will have access to all required equipment (fruit pickers, ladders, boxes) and use of Food Forward vehicles (if desired) which are located at their offices in North Hollywood. Pick leaders undergo a short training and will be supported by both the Pantry and Food Forward. If you are interested in becoming a pick leader, email the director of NHIFP, Luis Oliart (luis@fccnh.org). It’s a rewarding volunteer opportunity that immensely helps the Pantry and our clients. Thanks for your help. Luis Oliart, Director of NHIFP

  • 8. Reflections ! Joey K. "Donald Reflections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from May 1, 2016 and Dr. McDonald’s sermon was titled “A Muppet Blessing” based on Psalm 67. Psalm 67 begins “Let God grant us grace and bless us.”  The Psalm ends seven verses later with the words, “Let God continue to bless us; let the far ends of earth honor God.”  The lyric of the Psalm is a brief yet powerful instructive of what it means to bless and the power of kindness. We live in a time and place of instant communication, and as we know, especially in an election year. Rarely do political opponents have anything good to say about one another.  No news there, however, the other day I experienced a new low when one politico mocked the eating habits of an opponent.  With this in mind it might not hurt if every person who runs for office, be it dogcatcher or president, be required to memorize the poem “Apparent Failure” by Robert Browning.  “It is wiser to be good than bad, It is safer to be meek than fierce, It is fitter being sane than mad.  My own hope is, a sun will pierce the thickest cloud earth ever stretched; That, after last, returns the first, though a wide compass round be fetched; That what began best can’t end worst, Nor what God blessed once, prove accursed.” 1864 In a time when internet blogs are built for the sole purpose of denigrating people and thought we are not in agreement with, imagine what a kind word or thought might do.  Eighteenth century English chemist, Sir Humphrey Davy, wrote about the power of little things making a big difference when he penned the following.  “Life is made up, not of Great Sacrifices of duties, but of little things, in which Smiles and Kindnesses and small obligations, given habitually, are what Win and Preserve the Heart and Secure Comfort.”  It seems worthy of thought to consider being thankful, kind, and cheerful, healthy habits for the heart.
