This presentation briefs about the basic requirements & overall structure of API 600 Standard. The presentation includes clause by clause illustration with examples. NPS 4 (DN 100) Class 150 (PN 20) Manually Operated Bolted Bonnet Gate Valve is taken as an example & the requirements for this valve has been highlighted in the presentation. So that it becomes easy for one to understand what API is asking for.
The various screenshots from different standards are added to make it simpler & easier to understand. The detailed guidelines for testing of the prototype valve (example) from API 598 have been included in this presentation. Similarly, marking guidelines are taken from ASME B16.34 as specified in this standard.
API 600 is the primary steel gate valve purchase specification. API 600 details valve design/construction criteria as well as material/trim designations. ISO 10434 is a similar spec published in the ISO format.

67. ASME B16.34 – MARKING REQUIREMENTS
Name The Manufacturer’s name or trademark
Materials
Cast valves shall be marked with the heat number or heat identification and symbols (letters and numbers) as
given in the ASTM specifications to designate the material grade.
Rating
The valve body shall be marked with the number that corresponds to the pressure rating class designation
except the special class, limited class, intermediate rated – standard class and intermediate rated – special
class valves may instaed be marked with the valve’s maximum allowable temperature and its associated rated
temperature.
Temperature Temperature markings are not required except as indiacted above.
Size The NPS designation number shall be shown
Omission of Marking
On valves whose size or sape limits the body markings, they shall be ommited in the following order: a) size b)
rating 3) material 4) manufacturer’s name or trademark
Ring Joint Flange
Valves having ring-joint end flanges shall have the edge (periphery) of each ring-joint end flange marked with
letter “R” and the corresponding ring-froove number.
Multiple Material MArking
Material for valve bodies, bonnets, and cover plates that meet the requirements for more than one
specification or grade of the specification llisted in Table 1 (ASME B16.34 – 2013) may, at the manuufacturer’s
option, be marked with more than one of the applicable specification or grade symbols. These identification
markings shall be placed to avoid confusions in identification. The acceptabilty of multiple markings shall be in
accordance with guidelines set out in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section ll, Part D, Appendix 7.
