BMW introduced their first electric vehicle concept, the Z11, at the 1991 Frankfurt Auto Show, which helped add legitimacy to electric cars that had previously been seen as do-it-yourself science projects. The Z11 looked like a small BMW but had the expected high quality fit and finish of a BMW, showing it could be a proper electric vehicle rather than a hobby project, helping shift perceptions of electric cars.
