The document summarizes a study of research trends at Goa University using data from the university's institutional repository, IR@GU. It finds that the number of publications has steadily increased each decade. Chemistry and botany are the most researched subjects. Journal articles make up the largest portion of the repository. The top contributors are identified. The conclusion recommends continued support for open access repositories and harvesting research outputs to share knowledge.

2. Introduction
An IR is nothing but a digital archive of intellectual items, the whole knowledge thing of an institute
mainly a research and scientific, educational bodies, public organizations etc. Repositories are sorted
into various categories according to the type of content archived such as e-journals, e-theses, datasets,
books, multimedia, etc. Theses and dissertations are often recognized as the only source for research
work (Das & Saikia. 2014).
The repositories have been evaluated using content; preservation policies; right management; promotion
advertisements; services; feedback and access status as important parameters(Hashim & Jan. 2011).
Study of research trend using IR data is a common topic which has to be done time to time to know the
research trends. The IR@GU has been taken as a sample for research and study for this article. The data
has been taken from IR@GU and processed to build the result. The duration of research datasets in
digital repositories raises specific issues. Not all datasets created at the time of research have to be
curated and preserved. Some data are not worth preserving in the long term either because they were
erroneous or they are partial data that will never be usable without proper documentation (Foulonneau,
André, & CNRS - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, 2008).
Archival of scholarly communications is one a classical approach and has been referred and devised over
the time with a new and concurrent style. Digital repository is a chain in that series of archival using
efficient technology and combination of computer infrastructures and communication mediums. IRs are
the asset with full of precious knowledge and idea to nourish the future researcher communities.
IR@GU is has been built on same remarks and currently hosting several of knowledge resources
accessible for the community across the boundaries.

3. Aims and Objectives
The basic aims and objectives of the study are:
To identify the nature and services of IR of Goa University.
To study the thrust areas of research in Goa University.
To find out the growth in the contents.
To find out the various format of publications IR deals with.
To find the prominent researchers from various disciplines of study at Goa University.
To recommend areas where improvement and appreciation, research fund are to deployed.
Methodology for collecting the data is systematic and progressive in nature. The study sought
the change in research growth which is collected using the data exportation from the repository
to MS Excel and graph table were drawn based on the extracted data and various types of set of
data. The references and bibliographies are made using Mendeley, a reference manager, and
Citethisforme (http://www.citethisforme.com) website.

4. Institutional Repository Goa University an overview
The Institutional Repository at Goa University IR@GU, set-up in 2015 using DSpace, Open Source digital
repository solution, has aimed to collect, preserve and distribute the publications of the faculty and students
of the Goa University. The repository has the research data with bibliographic details of publications and
research outcomes since the foundation year of the university (1985) from secondary sources and the full-
text is added as it is available (from authors or other sources).
The details of bibliographic data are done while adding the full-texts. As of now, about a half of the total
data is with full-text publications. It in-house and enjoying with the spread of literature from almost all the
branches of knowledge that the University deals with. OAI-PMH: a protocol for repositories interoperability
are supported by the DSpace by default.
Data collection is done from following communities and collections created in IR@GU
Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (2 collections)
Faculty of Education (1 collection)
Faculty of Languages and Literature (7 collections)
Faculty of Law (1 collection)
Faculty of Life Sciences and Environment (8 collections)
Faculty of Natural Sciences (6 collections)
Faculty of Social Sciences(9 collections)
Non-faculty Groups (2 collections)

8. Results and Findings
The subject, Chemistry is having more research outcome i.e. 523 number of items followed by
Botany(437) and Hindi(414) respectively.
There is total 2885 Journal article, the highest number of item Book Chapters and books are at second
and third positions.
The decade 2010-2017 has more research outcome in order.
The result indicates that the university in involved in research and publishing outcomes in journals.
In the present investigation, it is evident from table-1 that in the year 2011-2017 there is enormous
collection growth in institutions repositories as compared to the year 1981-1985 as it was in the initial
stage.
Continuous increase thereafter in the research has been taken place since its inception to till date.
Timely researchers have been enrolled and contributed the knowledge publications, top ten contributors
are enumerated above.
Contents hosted in IR@GU are multi-lingual, English, Hindi, Konkani, and other regional languages.
The repository provides the RSS feed to subscribers and followers.
Email notification works smoothly and promptly. Email notification work with all activities;
registration, submission, authentication, approval etc.
IR@GU has been remarked as a lead research information provider for university administration which
helps the university to harness the loosely connected area of research.
It is identified that the university is involved in multi-disciplinary research with other institutions,
impact getting improvement in ranking.

9. Conclusion and Recommendation
Open Source has great power to run the information society and communities involved in
capturing, processing and presenting the knowledge across the world. Commercial publishers
and copyrighted agencies are actively involved in the support of Open Access and Open
Knowledge side by. Almost all the publishers have a policy of Open Access and Open data.
DSpace, digital repository system is one of them.
Goa University has implemented DSpace based IR to host the community research outcomes
and various knowledge publications. The results of the study show the significance of IR in
knowledge cultivation. Based on the factual data research trend is predicted. The result shows
there is a huge growth in the uses of IR chronologically. There might be a lack of the scope of
research outcome and uploaded data due to the copyright and other clauses of publishers. IRs
can host the metadata with the abstract level of information with other primary bibliographical
information international standards of various numbers.
In most of the universities, colleges, and institutions are in the process of Implementing IRs.
Financially, it is not much costly but it is a project which requires set of inputs, pre-planning,
objectives, control on content and vocabularies, license, harvesting policies etc. A psychological
factor also works something to met the set target and goal by the organization may be known as
Esprit de Corps one of the principles of Henri Fayol. University administration always reserves a
special grant for in-house research to solve the local problems and the outcome to be shared
through IRs. UNESCO and IFLA have been carrying various types of research and hosts the data
for the public the pattern must be followed at a prime level.
