Final presentation of Mustafa Hasanov for the "Energy Transitions in Contemporary and Emerging Societies"Summer School organised by the Durham Energy Institute and held at the Geography Department of Durham University.
The presentation looks at self-organisation with respect to local energy initiatives in the north of the Netherlands from practice theory perspective and raising the need for critical reflection on who self-organizes, for what purpose and how local communities see energy transition.
3. SELF-ORGANIZATION IS….
a result of spontaneous/unexplained interactions between the components of a
“disordered” system which result in an order
• Uncontrollable?
• Improvisation?
• Jugaad
4. SELF-ORGANIZATION
self-organisation is a process by
which the social relationships that
characterise relatively loose
networks are institutionalized
through the definition of mutual
interests, positions and relations
5. SELF-WHAT?
Things exist/happen because humans define
them, not just because they exist
Human actions that have rational, moral and
intentional dimensions nested in a certain
context.
Individuals directly effect social change and
transition through their own activities adapting to
the conditions, making use of and creating
opportunities, innovations, etc.
‘small scale’ processes that implies greater
12. ‘RESIDENT’S INITIATIVE’
TUINWIJK
IN HET ZONNETJE
Project for and by the whole Tuinwijk / Anyone can
participate.
Good not only for the environment, but also for the
wallet
Potential profits will flow back to the residents and the
neighborhood.
Set up in simple, transparent and fair manner. It is
obvious how it works, what is costs and what will
eventually save each participant.

15. PRELIMINARY CONCLUSIONS
•The will to change is collective and not imposed
externally
•Action-based instead of behavioral-change
oriented
•Authorities accommodate change easily if change is
addressed collectively
•Increasing role of semi-public organizations
(housing associations), however responsibility falls
to the “citizens”
16. QUESTIONS REMAIN…
What do we mean by self-organizing?
What do we mean by energy transition?
What changes after self-organizing is there?
Who benefits and who loses from self-
organizing/energy-transition?
Who self-organizes and why?

This is the picture for the three Northern Provinces
You can be mainstream and just sell what you prodice of your rooftop to an energy supplier of your choice or you can follow the path bellow:
Little people setup coops and initiatives, but they cannot sell the energy to others so they need to sell it to certified buyers. Only a Energy Supplier can provide you electricity
Each province has set up its own local level cooperatives which is registered merchant of energy (but can only buy energy from coops) if you wish you can sell your energy to them, but they still cannot sell you back
NLD is registered energy suppliers (electricity & gas) that sells local energy to people who want to buy cheap community energy. So you can decide that your energy supplier is NLD and buy the energy that you produce via the official channels.
However, that is the picvture what you see commonly when someone talks about the NL transition to local energy.
The picture at the grasroots is a bit more different.
From energy label A to Better.
A Dutch word-play
A new built area with A level housing, private owners, solar panel infiltration is high, but individual and not colelctive
They want to be the most sustainable area of the city
They want to do it collectively
At begining stage: trying to sort out how to do it. The main question that drives them is “What is in for me?”
Attended first meeting where they sort out seven problem areas for the theme of sustainability and will go for it.
- How they did it: with post its, which were later digitalised by the initators
First official meeting of the people who want to do soemthing with the theme of sustainability
They want to do the first step, ivite ppl for collective solar panel bid by early autumn
Originali idea of two neighborus that eventually went big due to networking
Solar amabasadors – people who spreadign the word and talking abut it
Three ismple rules: it is good for my pocket, good for my neighurhood and it is understandable
Eventually the housing coroprations active in the area jumped on board and ease the work (overlap of agendas)
The new vocabulary of enegry transition
Renrewable enrgy is not just a technical element, it starts to be mebeded in the life of people and isnitutions
You need specific skills and mix of people to setup and maintian such initaitve
Energy means more than megawast - financial, green, social…
Extended skills and pracices for self-orgaized initatives….
