1. RICE AREA ESTIMATION, SEASON 2018
Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
National Statistics and Information Authority
General Deputy Directorate of Geospatial Information Management
Kabul, Afghanistan
December, 2018
3. Introduction
• Annual rice production statistics of previous years had discrepancies
due to survey and method of data collection. This could effect the
national level decisions in term of rice import/export.
• Therefore, the need to estimate the rice cultivation area and
production with a higher data quality is a dully need of governamnet.
• Based on a MoU signed between MAIL and NSIA, both entities agreed
to conduct the rice area estimation using Remote Sensing Technology.
• The technical aspect of area estimation is responsibility of NSIA and
field data collection for verification and yield calculation is
responsibility of MAIL.
4. Objective
• Rice area estimation using GIS/RS technology
• Adding spatial dimension to the production data
• Higher data quality
• Timely and economically acceptable
6. Material
• Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 Satellite imageries
• List of rice cultivating provinces
• Rice crop calendar
• Land cover atlas
• Field data for verification
• Crop cutting data for production calculation
• Rice Phonological signatures from FAO
• GIS and RS software
