ABSTRACT
Rembang Regency is part of Central Java Province which located in northern part of Java Island. Its an
has unique characteristics because of it’s the differences in physical location between nothern and
southern part which are combination of coast area and limestone mountains. Based on its characteristic
, this paper aims to review and discuss about spatial pattern and structure of Rembang Regency which is
formed dominantlyby its history, physical landscape and economic growth. In terms of history, central
Kabupaten of Rembang is influenced by Islamic concept i.e. alon-alon (a big open space which is
surrounded by Great mosque, graveyard for Regent of Rembang, and government offices).
The second factor is physical landscape. In northern part, Rembang is bordered by Java Sea, so some of
districts are coast area. In contrast, southern part is limestone mountains. The difference in physical
landscape influences economic growth in Rembang. In northern part, people tend to have job related
with fisheries and marine sector (fish and sea salt enterprises). On the other hand, people in southern
part usually work in mining sector (quartz sand). Some people also work in agriculture sector (paddy and
palawija) and many small and medium enterprises/ SME (handicraft, embroidery, and bricks).
In recent years, local government of Rembang also encourages economic growth by developing natinal
harbour and oil pipe system from Cepu to harbour in Rembang and developing cement industry to
process quartz sand. Both of them are stiil in progress. In addition, in 2010, government has been built
steam power plant in Kecamatan Sluke (Kab. Rembang) which supplyelectricity in Java and Bali islands.
