Towards Sustainable use of natural resources
1. Towards sustainable use
of natural resources
How does the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MMM) promote
the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals?
2. Agenda 2030
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
2
• Sustainable Development Goals seek to make the world a better place
for us all. This can be achieved by combining social, environmental and
financial approaches into a holistic whole.
• The goals are shared by all UN member states. They belong to us all:
states, municipalities, companies, schools, you and me.
• Many of the goals are interlinked, which must be taken into account in
their achievement.
–> We need collaboration across sectors: states, branches of
administration, researchers, companies and citizens
3. The MMM as a promoter of SDGs
3
• Common task of the administrative branch: to implement and
develop a responsible food system and sustainable natural resources
economy
• Drivers of change: climate change, rapid technological development,
competition for increasingly scarce natural resources, the changing face
of global economy, changes in values and attitudes, changing
demographics and urbanisation
• We need sustainable solutions so that the bioeconomy and circular
economy can help to reduce the consumption of non-renewable raw
materials and energy and secure the availability of clean food and water,
while enabling diverse business activity and a thriving countryside.
7. Clean water and sanitation
7
• The UN strives to ensure that all people have access to water and sanitation. At the core of the agenda lies the
sustainable use of water resources. The need for fresh water will increase by 30 per cent by 2030, which
underscores the need for management of water resources and efficient use of water.
• How does the MMM promote access to and sustainable use of
water?
• We are reforming the water supply sector to secure high-quality drinking
water.
• We promote solutions that increase the reuse of water and substances and
energy present therein.
• We minimise the adverse effects of agriculture and forestry to bodies of
water by promoting the best cultivation, processing and work methods.
• We promote collaboration on transboundary waters with our neighbouring
countries and on a wider international scale.
• We promote the comprehensive management of bodies of water, including
their use, care and protection both domestically and internationally.
• We promote the improvement of food, water and energy security, since
these three sectors are strongly interlinked.
• Our domestic solutions also promote international water security.
8. Responsible consumption
8
• One of the UN’s goals is to implement a 10-year programming framework for sustainable consumption and
production. The UN seeks to ensure that by 2030, all people are aware of sustainable development and
environmentally friendly ways of life.
• How do the actions of the MMM promote sustainable consumption and
production?
• We are creating the conditions for an increasing and sustainable use of
biomasses to replace fossil raw materials and sources of energy.
• We develop and implement sustainable production methods for agriculture,
forestry and fisheries.
• We reduce food waste.
• We promote plant-based diets.
• We give nutrition recommendations.
• We develop regional food systems.
• We promote sustainable public procurement.
• We promote water responsibility pledges.
9. Climate change
9
• The UN strives to take urgent action against climate change and its effects. Rising temperatures affect bodies of
waters and seas, which will have an effect on food webs, fish stocks and livelihoods.
• How does the MMM combat climate change and its impacts?
• We develop business that can adapt to the changing climate.
• We develop preparedness for weather-related, climate-related and
financial risks and improve their forecasting.
• Our strategy and programming work strives to discover actions that
mitigate climate change and help us adapt to it.
• We increase protein self-sufficiency.
• We develop forestry and logging methods that are adapted to the
changing climate.
• We improve the export opportunities of Finnish expertise on
sustainable energy, food, forestry and water management.
10. Healthy and diverse aquatic environment
10
• The UN’s goal is to conserve the seas and marine natural resources and to promote their sustainable use.
• How does the MMM promote the conservation of marine natural
resources and their sustainable use?
• Our funding for maritime policy has an effect on the conservation,
planning and monitoring of the marine environment.
• Our development plan for the blue bioeconomy and R&D funding
helps to reduce the environmental burden on waters and promotes
the utilisation of nutrients in waters in order to prevent eutrophication.
• We allocate subsidies received from the European Maritime and
Fisheries Fund to the renewal, sustainable growth and improvement
of fisheries; we do not grant subsidies that are harmful from an
environmental perspective.
• We monitor fishing and are committed to promoting the EU’s
Common Fisheries Policy to guarantee maximum sustainable yields.
11. Terrestrial life
11
• The UN strives to conserve and restore terrestrial ecosystems and promote their sustainable use. This
includes the promotion of sustainable forestry and the fight against desertification, land degradation and loss
of biodiversity.
• How does the MMM promote the attainment of the goal?
• We increase the area of conserved forests by voluntary means and also develop
new conservation practices.
• We participate actively in international work on sustainable forestry and forest
management.
• We create the conditions for financially, ecologically and socially sustainable
agriculture and forestry.
• We develop the biotope management of commercial forests.
• We promote the fertility of fields, organic farming and diversity of agricultural
biotopes by means of the Common Agricultural Policy.
• We tackle harmful invasive alien species by developing and renewing legislation.
• We promote the sustainable use of genetic resources, breed new varieties and
manage collections of genetic resources.
• The implementation of the Finnish national biodiversity strategy conserves and
restores terrestrial ecosystems.
12. 12
Food-Forest-Energy-Water NEXUS
• All SDGs are interlinked.
• Linkages abound
especially between
SDGs associated with
water, food, energy and
forestry.
• The MMM looks at the
big picture and seeks
synergistic actions while
avoiding actions that
hamper the attainment
of other goals.
