well-being and social equity, while

In its simplest expression, a green
economy can be thought of as one which
is low carbon, resource efficient and
socially inclusive”

In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive” Protection and restoration of natural capital a key component.

  1. Seagrass (P. oceanica) is the dominant marine ecosystem in the coastal waters of the Balearic Islands between 0.5-45 m depth. Recently its extension has been estimated at 633 km2, which indicates that 50 % of extent of Posidonia along Spanish coast is in the Balearic Islands. As coastal ecosystems, seagrass meadows are exposed to pressures derived from human activity. Where disturbed, seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean sea are lost at an annual rate of 2 %. We have quantified the biophysical value of Balearic seagrass meadows as carbon sinks, nitrogen sinks and key habitat for food provision (i.e. commercial fisheries and recreational fishing of seagrass related species). Only considering these 3 ES (there are also other valuable ES that we are still quantifying as coastal protection), the annual economic value of avoided seagrass loss (2 % yr-1) in the Balearic Islands Marine Protected Areas (assuming MPA existing for 10 years-a very conservative value because some of them are in place for more than 20 yr)) is about 0.5 million € yr-1. We are now in the process to conduct the actual Cost Benefit Analysis of seagrass ES provision vs conservation costs. However, these results point out that by only considering some seagrass ES the economic value of Balearic seagrass meadows at risk of loss exceed their conservation costs.
  2. High dependency on ecosystems for individual wellbeing and security: The rural poor depend more directly and more urgently on the availability and access to natural resources for their livelihoods and wellbeing. Consequently, the rural poor are immediately and directly affected by the degradation of environmental quality, ecosystems and biodiversity caused by pollution and over-extraction of resources. Growth sectors depend on env. quality: The foreseen wellbeing pathways of several developing countries are dependent on the sustainable use and quality of their environment and nature, e.g. agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism sector. Example – agriculture: Agriculture can be a major cause of pollution (e.g. nutrient, pesticide … ). Policies to improve agricultural production should not result in negative impacts from nutrient leaching / pollution. → Many coastal areas are polluted by nutrient run-off from agriculture and urban areas as well as by harmful chemicals. This threatens fish stocks and contaminates fish for human consumption. → Eutrophication leads to overgrowth of water bodies, which leads to stagnant water, which leads to health risks. Example – tourism: Depends on good quality environment, e.g. good quality water, no litter. But also significant economic reliance on tourism leads to the (seasonal) generation of increased amounts of waste in urban and tourist centres. → Marine litter degrades ecosystems for tourism.   No Plan B: There is often no “Plan B” or resources to address a situation gone wrong … Equity: Issues linked to equity are even more pronounced that in Europe. “Poverty exposes people to pollution” and environmental degradation.
