This paper summarizes the evolution of views about street, and describes some empirical evidences from several cases showing the potentiality of street to bring inclusive community. From such cases, informal utilization of street space seems to be one of key factors to bring social interaction in street space, especially in developing countries. Therefore, while government’s attitude toward informality is often cumbersome, apparently informality needs to be taken into account in urban planning and design process in developing countries, including Indonesia, to stimulate social life in urban area.

Alberta Transportation (TRANS) developed a new Design-Build (DB) project delivery framework to complement its traditional Design-Bid-Build (DBB) delivery mechanism and the successful Public-Private-Partnership (P3) or Design-Build-Finance-Operate (DBFO) delivery process. The new DB process incorporated all benefits and efficiencies of the P3 process as well as the rigorous quality assurance procedures of the DBB contracts. TRANS successfully implemented the DB process on a systems interchange at Anthony Henday Drive (AHD) and Stony Plain Road (SPR)/100 Avenue in Edmonton. The DB process provided substantial cost savings over the DBB approach and also allowed the interchange to be opened to traffic one year earlier on November 4, 2011.

Every road authority targets good ride quality in their pavement management. Ride quality depends strongly on the experienced vibrations, induced by road roughness. International Roughness Index, IRI, is the most common way to describe road roughness, while ISO 2631 defines how to measure human whole body vibration (WBV) experienced by the driver and the passengers during the ride. IRI is defined by means of a quarter car model, and the same model is here used to get a relation between IRI-values and vertical human vibrations as defined in ISO 2631. Criterions for discomfort, activities/safety and (occupational) health are the reasons for vibration limits in the ISO 2631 standard. The relation between IRI and human WBV helps us therefore to create management policies for road roughness limits, to be used in our pavement management systems.

In a world of rapidly increasing urbanization, striving to develop more livable cities, the city’s streets designing and planning should be high on the agenda for policymakers, city planners and other practitioners, as well as researchers. Designing streets is not as easy as it might originally seem, however, done correctly it means that one third of the city was designed successfully with an immense impact on the rest of the city. The key challenge in developing sustainable and fulfilling streets is to develop an integrated approach in planning them, where it is necessary to consider all aspects involved. Meanwhile, efforts devoted to this topic vary considerably from place to place. Thus, this paper aims at discussing the main elements involved in designing streets for a livable city, in a comprehensive approach including pedestrians, vehicles, and parking areas.
