1. It’s not surprising
that I would have a
career in powertrain
consulting. My father
founded Cosworth
in 1958 and it was a
great place to ‘learn
the trade’ and to forge relationships with the
many high-technology suppliers in this part
of the UK.
When we set up Integral Powertrain in 1998 I knew it was important
to live up to the same high standards, but beyond this I wanted us
to gain a reputation for being more responsive, easier to deal with
and to care more about outcomes than our competitors.
Although keen to develop our own technology and techniques,
our sharp focus on outcomes had to mean we would never be too
proud to include technology or processes developed by others.
Combining innovation with proven engineering best practice has
always been our policy and will continue to be so.
Today our company is made up of experienced engineers working
in dynamic project teams and, unlike most of our competitors, all
projects are represented at Board level.
Our clients now include some of the most prestigious OEMs and
Tier 1 suppliers in the world who put their trust in us to meet their
demanding sustainability targets and increase the attractiveness
of their products.
We are all committed to supporting our existing and future clients
as they strive to meet this challenge.

3. View from the Technical Director
e-Drive Systems
With its powertrain heritage, the e-Drive Systems group brings
together expertise in electromagnetics, electronics, mechanical
design, thermal management and control software. Our first
production machine, a high performance e-drive, made its debut
in 2013 and is produced in our own manufacturing facility
in Milton Keynes.
As well as supporting clients projects directly, there are two focal
points for the e-Drive Systems group: ultimate performance and
affordable hybrids suitable for high volume applications.
Ultimate Performance
Using our unrivalled expertise in high-speed geared machines, the
e-Drive Systems group provides solutions to the most demanding
requirements of power density with restricted package availability.
We have developed a world-leading, scalable architecture which
enables us to produce machines with exceptional continuous ratings
for a wide range of applications including premium passenger cars,
both on and off-highway, aerospace and racing.
High-Volume Hybrids
We believe that hybrid technology can be attractive for higher
volume applications but the benefit-to-cost ratio must be maximised
and the impact on vehicle engineering must be minimised. Our
e-Drive Systems group has created an innovative family of machines
to deliver the highest possible performance and efficiency at 12V
and 48V. These machines incorporate a fully integrated inverter with
embedded control which can be configured to meet a wide range
of requirements, including traction, electrical ancillaries, starter/
generator systems, electrical pressure-charging and power split
transmissions.
Manufacturing and Industrialisation
For prototype and low-volume manufacturing we can supply motors
directly from our own facility in Milton Keynes. For higher volumes
we provide supply chain development and process engineering to
support OEM/Tier 1 clients to manufacture in-house or to outsource
to Tier 2.
Innovation in Boosting and Turbo-compounding - SuperGen
Boosting, and in some sectors turbo-compounding, are key
enablers for most promising CO2
reduction systems. IP has
developed a world class capability in this area and has helped many
clients to improve performance. Our SuperGen technology also
shows we can apply genuine innovation.
Combining turbo machines with two electrical machines and
an epicyclic traction drive, SuperGen offers improved response,
CO2
and controlled emissions across a range of applications
in a package no bigger than a high output alternator.
It’s an exciting time
to be a powertrain
engineer. Advances in
processes and tools
are accelerating the
pace of incremental
improvement and
we are seeing the results in better designed
products with lower CO2
emissions and improved
performance.
We are also finding the intense drive for improvement is generating
strong interest in ‘step-change’ technologies. IP has taken
advanced new concepts and produced first ever functioning
prototypes in areas such as lightweight structures, pressure
charging and turbo-compounding systems. What’s more we have
been instrumental in addressing robustness, feasibility and cost to
create viable, production-ready products from these innovations.
Increased electrification is another important theme for us and our
e-Drive Systems division has established new benchmarks for high
power density as well as cost efficient low voltage machines.
e-Drive Systems also provides vehicle level support on a range
of hybrid projects.
These are indeed exciting times in our industry, and I look forward
to working with you to help meet the many technological
challenges ahead.
