1. THE CONTEXT

N. Negroponte
Being Digital, 1984

"The best way to appreciate the merits and consequences of
being digital is to reflect on the difference between bits and
atoms …

This is the transition from an industrial age (age of atoms) to
an information age (bits)”.

B. Shneidermann

the new computing is about what users can do.

Successful technologies are those that in harmony with user's

KEY ISSUES OF E-LEARNING
1. E-LEARNING UNITS (10 YEAR OF EXPERIENCE)
- maturity level?

2. FROM ANALOG TO DIGITAL AGE
- cultural change?

3. THE (TRUE) LIFELONG LEARNING IS COMMING
-online communities, collective intelligence (wikipedia)
-the mobile and nomadic society

KEY ISSUES OF (MODERN) LEARNING

The medium is the message (Marshall McLuhan)
“The medium change the form of transmission as well as the way we consume /
assimilate the message. In the future, the (digital) medium will influence how we
think and act”

Example: the google search engine

- look for instant & accurate searches
- feel confident and reliability on (google-)Internet
- ask for anything (weather, how to, where is..)
- prefer (google) as a knowledge provider

                   …New users learning on Internet

KEY ISSUES OF (MODERN) LEARNING

OER: Open Educational Resources
• any kind of educational resources include full courses, course materials,
modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, etc.
• access to open content provided free of charge

OER from Universities (i.e. MIT OpenCourseWare since
2001)
            VS.

OER from the internet community (i.e. Youtube,
wikipedia…)
…we can learn from Universities or from the Internet community

3. TRENDS

P. Lèvy
Collective Intelligence: The nomadic planet, 2004

The nomadic nature of this time is related with the rapid and
continuous transformation of scientific, technical,
professional and mental fields .
Even if we don’t move us, the world change around us.

Points of view –> ICT decision makers

The online campus is a “fact” in Universities

  Benefits for the teacher/student but….

  - Growing (storage, courses, students…)
  - Rapid changes (obsolescence),
  - New tools / new needs
  - Cost of maintenance (licensing, support)

Look for a sustainable model (please!)

The role of an e-leaning Centre in Higher Education Institutions 23
Points of view –> teacher staff
Online is ideal for “my Master course” and for my target
audience (foreigners, workers) but….

- No time for tutoring (anywhere, anytime…), and I cannot
attend in “real time”.
- Content production, tutoring, motivating issues is a real
“hard work”
- I’m always engaged with technology issues, and I need
support, sometimes frustrating.

Look for a easier model (please!)

The role of an e-leaning Centre in Higher Education Institutions 24
Points of view –> students
Online is good for a flexible learning (I’m on “erasmus”
mobility), I’m active on class, but…

- To much work, teachers have different tools and methods
to manage my activities. How I will be evaluated?
- Do I have to go to f2f classes?
- I’d like to use my own tools in Internet (more cool)
- The “copy-paste” panic….

Look for a flexible & creative model (please!)
