The devotees accept everything as a gift of God,
because God is the source of all.
They think about God, speak about God, hear about God —
in short they spend their lives revelling in God all the time (8, 9).
(Still they are sagusaguṇṇa-devotees only.a-devotees only.
They are ignorant of the highest nature of the Lord.)
Vibhūti is the manifestation of Lord
and yoga is the power of manifestation.

BHAGAVAD GITA Study by Bhakticaru Swami
11. Only knowledge can be unshaken.Only knowledge can be unshaken.
Appreciation of the Lord as the cause of the world is not enough.Appreciation of the Lord as the cause of the world is not enough.
The connection must be clear. The connection must be clear.
Does the creator really become a creator?Does the creator really become a creator?
What type of creation is it?What type of creation is it?
All these are to be understood. All these are to be understood.
Only then can you understand Isvara.Only then can you understand Isvara.
The degree of reality enjoyed by the creation is to be understood first. The degree of reality enjoyed by the creation is to be understood first.
If that is understood, the status of the creator is also very clearly understood. If that is understood, the status of the creator is also very clearly understood.
When this is so, a person will be endowed with this unshaken vision. When this is so, a person will be endowed with this unshaken vision.
Because the word yoga is used, we have to clarify the meaning. Yoga can be
anything. Therefore, Bhagavan gives the meaning in the verse.
http://practicalphilosophy.in/wpcontent/uploads/2012/08/GitaaSaaram.pdf
What type of vision is that which is not shaken? That is told here.
12. This state of unwavering yoga is elaborated upon in the shloka.
The devotee who understands the Lord's supreme power
worships Him with pure devotion.
NATURE MEANS POTENCY.
KNOWLEDGE AND DEVOTION

13. He can understand what is good and bad,
real and unreal,
true and false,
temporary and eternal.
A truly intelligent yogi,
due to his self-regulated spiritual life,
can perceive God's presence constantly
Intelligent people worship omnipresent God with devotion.

through many, many millions of births,
one's heart is always covered

The dust quickly clears,
and one is elevated to the platform of pure knowledge.
not by mental speculation or argument.
15. That in which everything has its being.
Like pots have their being in clay, the jagat has its being in the self-existent sat-vastu.
The self alone is self-existent;
everything becomes evident to it.
So, what is self-evident is self-existent and
anything not self-evident cannot be called self-existent.
11--I am the creator of everything
Aham sarvasya prabhavahAham sarvasya prabhavah
Ah am here means param brahma,
the one who is called Vasudeva.
Prabhava means the source of creation;
so, I am the cause for the creation of everything

16. There are many who repeat God's name, serve Him, and meditate on
Him. But very fewBut very few are capable of pure devotion born of true realization
that He is the sourceHe is the source of all thingsof all things..
When man knows that the Lord is the

that there is nothing else

he spontaneously offers worship to Him.

17. This jagat continues to exist and is sustained by Me.
A created object sustains itself for a length of time undergoing partial
changes and finally a total change, in the form of disappearance.
Similarly, Bhagavan may create everything and then appoint somebody
else to be in charge of it.To negate this idea, Bhagavan says,
'mattah sarvam pravartate — because of Me everything is sustained.because of Me everything is sustained.
Somebody may create something, but then, its care may fall to someone
else. Like modern parents. They are the cause for the children alright but
then somebody else takes care of them.

This verse gives a vivid picture of the daily life and

One who has developed such an outlook towards life
will worship Ishvara at all times.
This is indicated by the worlds "maam bhajante"."maam bhajante".
He will experience sorrow onlyHe will experience sorrow only
if he forgets that Ishvara is the cause of everything.if he forgets that Ishvara is the cause of everything.
Shri Krishna says that one who knows Ishvara as the
cause of every-thing will
develop an extremely positive attitude towards life.
He will take failures as learning opportunities, not as
triggers for depression.
He will never question why something bad happened to
him, knowing that it is a result of his prior actions.
GITA Ch 10 , Verse 9
29. The life and mental functions of the ignorantignorant are wholly devoteddevoted
to the worldto the world, and they live and die entangled in the meshes of
samsara.
When the devotees meet together,
they talk only of God,
His power and Yoga.
But the real devotee
consecrates his body, mind and life to the Lord.
His mind thinks of the Lord;
his limbs do the work of the Lord;
his eyes see the Lord;
his reason understands the presence of the Lord
everywhere.
His whole life is thus absorbed in the Lord.
His whole life is a continued worship.
The life of the true devoteetrue devotee is
beautifullydescribed in this verse.
Gita Makarandam
Even though they perceive things
distinctly, these wise men see
something more.
What is seen by the eyes is a form and this
form is distinct from every
other form. That they see. But then, they see
something more because they also
appreciate that the object perceived, the
perception and the perceiver all have their

existent.

ISHVARA CREATION
They know Isvara as the cause of the creation and the truth of that Isvara as

karana-karya, is the basis of the whole teaching.
Therefore, the entire jagat , which includes the body,
mind, sense complex is a product and is mithya.
The effect is inseparable from the cause, which is Brahman.
Because it is inseparable, the effect is mithyamithya ; it is only apparent.

spiritual education that man can get.
Do we not see how worldly people talk of worldly matters
endlessly? That is their samskara. If any one mentions the
name of God in such a company he is ridiculed and
condemned. The true aspirant should not mix in such company.
GITA Ch 10 , Verse 9
34. The devotee is like a ripe fruitThe devotee is like a ripe fruit full of sweet juice.
Sweet juice comes out of it always.
A group of devotees thinking of God and His ways and
exchanging intimate thoughts and experiences, is verily a Heaven
on earth. They receive knowledge from one another, derive
inspiration and encouragement, test and confirm their views,
attitudes and angles of vision. Such mutual enlightenment

GITA Ch 10 , Verse 9
35. HOW DO SUCH PEOPLE LIVE?
Speaking and singing about the glories of God gives the devotees great
satisfaction (tuṣhyanti), and delight (ramanti).
Ramanti is with reference to
the external world; so, it
involves people here.
TUSYANTI

GITA Ch 10 , Verse 9
In this way, they worship him through the processes of remembering,
hearing, and chanting. This is the threefold bhakti comprising of shravaṇa,
kīrtan, and smaraṇa. This has previously been described in the commentary
on verse 9.14.
36. There are two ways of going after things for happiness
One can go after things for happiness one can happily go after things.
Going after things to discover
happiness generally does not work.
If you are happy with yourself as a
person, then you need not go after
things. It does not produce any
result for you. But then, you can do
things joyfully.
Wherever there is any ray of glory, anything striking,
that is where Isvara is present for you to recognise.
Clarity takes place only when you begin to part with the knowledge you
have, sharing it with another person. listen and reflect on what you have
understood by sharing it with others and in discussions among yourselves.

GITA Ch 10 , Verse 9
37. The devotees feel satisfied and delighted. The contemplation of
the Divine is an end in itself, and joy derived from it is
pure and perfect. When a person begins to feel this joy which
is unlike any other sensual pleasure, he finds no attraction for
any thing else.
He sees the Lord everywhere and he sees
nothing other than the Lord anywhere.
The devotee's life is dedicated and consecrated to the
Lord. His one and only aim is to know the Lord and be with
Him. He is ready to sacrifice his life for realizing his aim.
He sings the name of the Lord in ecstatic joy,
he laughs, he speaks out of the fullness of joy, and gets himself
lost in divine intoxication. For him the whole world is trans-
figured and deified.

GITA Ch 10 , Verse 10
TO KNOWING BHAGAVAT-TATTVA
there is also an element of gracean element of grace involved
This is one of the key verses in the Gita,
in which the link between bhakti and jnana, devotion and
knowledge, is clearly stated. Bhakti, Jnana—that is the
natural order of evolution in Self-realization.
In this verse the word buddhi-yogam is very significant. In this verse the word buddhi-yogam is very significant.
45. Blessings or reward from Ishvara
LOWEST TYPE OF BLESSINGS HIGHEST TYPE OF BLESSINGS
since we have already heard Shri
Krishna say that Ishvara will carry the
material burdenmaterial burden of his devotees in the
previous chapter. Ch 9
ATMAJNANA
The highest type of blessing that
can be given to a devotee is not
material, it is intellectual.it is intellectual. No
object, wealth, social sta-tus or
possession can stand in front of
the knowledge of the true nature of
things.
What is the result of this intellectual
understanding? It is the ability
to see Ishvara in everything, and
everything in Ishvara.

46. The vision of equanimity 5.19, 6.33
If someone tells us that the necklace we had lost is actually around our neck, we do not
have to do anything or go anywhere in order to find it. We know where to look for it.
Similarly, this vision given to us by Ishvara enables us to see him everywhere and in
everything.

Second Chapter the Lord, instructing Arjuna, said that He had spoken to him
of many things and that He would instruct him in the way of buddhi-yoga.
Buddhi-yoga itself is action in Krishna consciousness;
that is the highest intelligence.
When one tries to go back home, back to Godhead, and takes fully to
Krishna consciousness in devotional service,
his action is called buddhi-yogam. In other words, buddhi-yogambuddhi-yogam is theis the
process by which one gets out of the entanglement of this material world.process by which one gets out of the entanglement of this material world.

Buddhi means
intelligence
yoga means
mystic activities
or mystic elevation.
The ultimate goal of progress is Krishna. People do not know this; therefore the association of
devotees and a bona fide spiritual master are important.
48. When he knows that the
goal is Krishna, but he
takes pleasure in mental
speculations to
understand Krishna, he is
acting in
jnana-yoga.
When a person knows the
goal of life but is addicted
to the fruits of activities,
he is acting in
karma-yogakarma-yoga.
This complete yoga is the
highest perfectional stage of
life.
when he knows the goal and
seeks Krishna completely in
Krishna consciousness and
devotional service, he is
acting in bhakti-yoga, or
buddhi-yogabuddhi-yoga,
which is the complete yoga
This is one of the key verses in the Gita,
in which the link between bhakti and jnana, devotion and
knowledge, is clearly stated. Bhakti, Jnana—that is the
natural order of evolution in Self-realization.

50. Brahmajnana is the gift of the Lord. The realization of the Jiva that Brahman
alone is and that he is no other than Brahman, is Brahmajnana This
knowledge is in the hands of God, and it can be obtained by means of
loving and faithful worship.

51. When the Lord is pleased wilh His devotee, He bestows Brahmajnana
which unites the devotee and the Lord forever and ever.
So Bhakti is the first step in spiritual evolution for all seekers.
Here two great qualities of the devotee
arc mentioned
(I) steadfastness
in devotion
(2) worshipping
with love.
When we come across rare men who are born with
Brahmajnana, it should be understood that they have spent
many many lives in pure and loving devotion to the Lord.
GITA Ch 10 , Verse 10
Gita Makarandam
52. (I)Continuous memory of the Lord is essential
So the devotee should recognize the Lord's presence everywhere
and thus the devotion becomes continuous in course of time.
Wherever he turns, the Lord is there in one
form or other.
If one recalls 7.7. 7 to 11 in the7 to 11 in the 9.9. 16 to 1916 to 19 and
the whole of the Vibuti yoga,,(Chapter 10)(Chapter 10)

How can the devotee have continuous memory of the Lord ?
This Discourse shows the way. The manifold manifestations of the
Lord ire vividly presented to fill the imagination of the devotee.
GITA Ch 10 , Verse 10
Gita Makarandam
53. (2) Loving worship of the Lord is another attribute of
the true devotee.
What then should be man's love and affection for the Lord ?
Such love is needed, and since God's love is infinite. no one
should feel that His grace has not descended on him.
Is not the Lord the friend of all beings?
Though he is the sovereign of all the worlds He is at the same
time a friend of all. He declares Himself to be a friend again
and again. Does He not say to Arjuna 'you are dear to Me'?
GITA Ch 10 , Verse 10
Gita Makarandam
54. ‘‘BuddhiyogaBuddhiyoga’’
Buddhlyogam : What is Buddhiyoga?Buddhlyogam : What is Buddhiyoga?
It is reason (vlchara), the path of uncompromisingIt is reason (vlchara), the path of uncompromising
discrimination between the Real and the unreal, discrimination between the Real and the unreal,
between Atma and Anatma.between Atma and Anatma.
Such analytical reasoning ultimately leads the seeker to the
tremendous conclusion that his limited self manifesting as
‘I’ is nothing else but the Supreme Brahman.
GITA Ch 10 , Verse 10
Gita Makarandam
The ‘I’ dissolves in Brahman, even as a water drop merges in
the ocean. Such discriminative reasonis the gift of God. .Such discriminative reasonis the gift of God. .
Reason (vichara) leads man step by step to the ultimate Reality.
He who is firmly established in this Yoga holds on only to the
essence of things (arti, bhati, priva) and does not recognise
name and form {nama, rupa).
55. Thus Bhakti evolves
into Jnana.
The Lord silences all foolish talk about the superiority of Bhakti
or Jnana. "My Bhakti is superior to your jnana—or my Jnana
is superior to your Bhakti."—Such half-digested nonsense should be given
up once for all.
God with form (Sakara) is also God without form (Nirakara).
God with attributes (Saguna) is also God without attributes (Nlrguna).
The transition from the Sakara to theSakara to the NirakaraNirakara takes place spontaneously
by the will of the Lord.
GITA Ch 10 , Verse 10
Gita Makarandam
There 'dasoham'dasoham** dissolves in 'soham.dissolves in 'soham.**
The point to note is that Self-realization is the free gift
of God, when he is pleased with the love of the devotee. He
knows the opportune moment when this Atma Jnana can flash
in the mind of the devotee.
If Bhakti is the flower jnana is the fruit.

Divine Grace and the power of understanding, buddhiyoga
64. The renowned Shankaraachaarya has elaborated upon this
illustration in his Gita commentary. His illustration of Buddhi yoga is
comprised of the lamp with a lamp holder, wick, and oil.
The lamp holder is the quality of
vairagya or dispassion,
the oil is prasaada buddhi or the
willingness to accept everything in
life as Ishvara’s blessing.
The lamp is nourished by a gentle breeze in the
form of constant devotion to Ishvara, but can be
extinguished by an impure mind containing
strong likes and dislikes.
the wick is brahmacharya
or continence

65. With these 10 & 11 shlokas, Shri Krishna summarizes the path of the bhakti marga or
devotional means to attain Ishvara.
In bhakti, IshvaraIn bhakti, Ishvara’’s grace is emphasized rather than individual effort.s grace is emphasized rather than individual effort.
In the Indian tradition this is pictorially depicted by comparing a monkey with a cat.
In "markatanyaaya""markatanyaaya", the method of the monkey, a baby monkey has to hang on to its
mother with its own effort. But in "marjalanyaaya""marjalanyaaya", the method of the cat, a kitten does
not have to do anything because its mother holds her by its neck.
Likewise, Ishvara takes care of his devotees.Likewise, Ishvara takes care of his devotees. He will ensure that their material needs
are taken care of. But more importantly, he will ensure that all our ignorance isour ignorance is
destroyeddestroyed and that we are educated spiritually. This is in contrast with other paths to
Ishvara that require significant self effort. There is no need to roll any beads or sit in
any postures. All that is required is surrender.

The Lord knows that wealth, power,

They pass away in time.

The Lord. Where is He seated ?
He is seated in the human heart. It is

Without His grace, this cannot happen.
And this lamp of knowledge

68. The darkness of ignorance which is enveloping man for ages and
ages isshattered at one stroke, once for all. No more does he wander
in the wilderness of samsara. No more does he think of
quenching his thirst in the waters of a mirage.
The bound soul who was thinking of himself as a body, subject to birth and
death and all the thousand shocks of earthly existence, now realizes in a
flash that He is the immaculate and perfect Atma.
He now knows the sharp distinction between
the real and the unreal. He is now a Jivanmuktah.
