Using The Media For Dissemination In Turkey, S. Acikalin
1. Involvingthe Turkish Media and Stakeholders in the DESIRE Project “Examples of Success, and some Failures” F. Ocakoğlu, S. Açıkalın Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Turkey
2. As part of the DESIRE project, we contacted stakeholders and the media in connection with the Turkish study sites of Eskisehir and Karapinar. Here we demonstrate the significant success (and some failures) in our dissemination of the aims, methods and products of the project.
5. Media Success in getting our story into newspapers, TV reports, TV discussions, etc.…
6. And also some failures…. Both the local and national press in Turkey are hungry for sensational problems such as family disaster, sex scandals, the threat of drought, etc. that attracts the interest of people. The Desertification issue has a chance in this respectandwepartiallybenefittedfromthis. But sometimes villagers insist on the idea “there is no desertification” or “desertification is from God”
7. And also some failures…. We couldn’t make the Media understand that soil mining is a bad thing for sustainable land management
8. HOW? Our level of enthusiasm is very high! we arranged several meetings between experts we visited local people several times and explained DESIRE which is also new to us methodologically.
9. HOW? Our level of enthusiasmwas very high! we arranged several meetings between experts we visited local people several times and explained DESIRE which is also new to us methodologically
11. To involve stakeholders… We took all of them from their homes by bus to attend the meeting.. We offered lots of lunch and dinner.. We drank lots of tea with them… We gave them some gifts.. We tried to solve their problems.. We tried to make them feel comfortable and important.. We gave them ownership of the project..
12. To involve media… Our two colleagues working with WB3, Mr. Mutlu Gürler and Dr. Mehmet Zengin are key personalities in bigger enterprises such as special TV broadcasts and interviews. Mr. Gürler in particular has very good relations with press agencies and politicians that enabled a quick and strong connection. These TV programs have been so powerful that for several weeks afterwards we received feed-back from farmers.
13. We found many opportunities to invite the local press to witness our work
14. And we wrote press releases after every activity…
15. Last words… We have great enthusiasm! We used all possible personal connections in the media We always inform the media (invitations and press releases), even if they don’t respond or care Meeting with stakeholders are carefully planned for their convenience: in the field, in their homes, at the mosque, etc. We try to solve problems (about sustainable land management, sometimes at a personal level)
16. Now we are implimenting our strategies in both study sites on their own lands with their own desire…
