Some facts
 Nigerian food is mainly based on soups
such as Egusi, but it is very diverse and
has many strange plates and snacks.
 Nigerian soups are usually thick pastes or
stews with very strong flavours and many
different tastes.
 As well as soups Nigerian food consists of
many rice dishes and snacks.
Nigerian soups
 As you already know the traditional Nigerian diet
is based on soups.
 Nigerian soups are always eaten with pounded
yam or gari
 Because soups are such an important part of
Nigerian cooking there are many type of soups.
 Despite the fact that soups are eaten using your
hands it is considered very important the way
you eat it.
How to eat soup
 Normally before eating soup, you are
offered a metal dish or basin and a towel.
You will be expected to rinse your hands
but not to use the towel. This is because
your hands should always be moist when
eating soup or your fingers will get sticky
from the yam or gari. You should also
know that people will normally look at
how dirty you make the water from the
bowl and judge your hygiene from this.
 Then you will be served a bowl of soup and a
small dish with pounded yam or gari.
 To eat the soup, first, you get a small ball of
yam or gari and roll it using your fingers as a
base and you thumb to roll it on your fingers.
 After that you put the ball into the soup and use
your fingers to push the ball around and your
thumb to put it into your mouth.
 It is considered rude or messy to get more
than the first joint of your fingers dirty or
full of food.
 It is also rude for older people to eat soup
with a spoon or otherwise.
Garri
 Garri is a powder made from a variant of
the potato called cassava
 It is also called gari, garry or garium
sulphate
 It is used in soup or can be mixed with
water and sugar (also chocolate powder)
to make a sweet drink.
Pounded yam
 Yam is a vegetable in
the family of the
potato and is mashed
up into a paste
somewhat like
mashed potato, and is
eaten with soup. It is
also fried as if to
make chips
Different kinds of soups
 There are many kinds of Nigerian soups,
most are peppery, and all contain either
meat or fish and some both.
Pepper soup
Bitter-leaf soup
Okra soup
Other Nigerian foods
 There are many other Nigerian dishes and
snacks such as:
Moi moi
 Moimoi is
a Nigerian steamed
bean pudding made from a
mixture of washed and
peeled black-eyed
beans, onions and fresh
ground peppers (usually a
combination of bell
peppers and chilli or
Scotch bonnet)
Jollof rice
 There are many
variations of Jollof
rice. The most
common basic
ingredients are: rice,
tomatoes and tomato
paste, onion, salt, and
red pepper. Beyond
that, nearly any kind
of meat, vegetable, or
spice can be added.
Chin chin
 Chin Chin is
a fried snack popular
in Nigeria. It is a
sweet, baked or
fried dough of wheat
flour and eggs
Fried plantain
 Plantain is like a
bigger version of a
banana and is used
before it is ripe to
make fried plantain
which is usually
accompanied by rice
You try it!
 Do you like any of these foods or have
you tried any?
 What do you think about the okra? And
the garden egg?
Thank you!
