Squanto, a Patuxet Native American born in the 1580s, assisted the Pilgrims after their first winter in the New World. In 1614, he was kidnapped by Englishmen and sold into slavery until friars discovered this and took him in, teaching him Christianity. Squanto learned English in London and returned to his homeland, where he settled with the Pilgrims and helped them establish their colony.
