2. INTRODUCTION
• Faye G Abdellah began her nursing
career in 1942.
• She received her diploma in
Nursing from Fitkin Memorial
Hospital school of nursing in
Neptune, New Jersy.
• 1945-She received her BS.
• 1947-She received her MA.
• 1955-She received her EdD from
Teachers College, New York.

3. ABDELLAH’S TYPOLOGY
• She developed her typology to
promote a professional status &
autonomy of nursing.
• She used the problem solving
approach as a basis for her typology.
• Her typology of nursing problems
was first published in 1960.
• In 1973 she refined some of her
beliefs in nursing

• The major typology of
Abdellah’s typology is a list of
nursing problems.
• Nursing problem is a condition
presented by a client, nurse c
an offer an assistance.
• Abdellah has presented 21
nursing problems

• Abdellah also describes means
of solving problems.
• The analyzer identifies overt &
covert problems & selects
appropriate course of action
to solve the problems.
• Abdellah emphasizes nurse
rather than patient to solve

• Refers to health needs.
• Is viewed as a state that
eludes illness.
• Can also be described as a
state in which a person has no
unmet needs & no anticipated
or actual impairments.

12. NURSING
•Is a helping profession.
•Is a comprehensive service
that combines art & science.
•Uses nursing process a
problem solving approach.
•Can use 21 nursing
problems as a guide for
nursing care.
