Humans, increasingly, manufacturer their own air. In and around the three-dimensional aerial environments within and above urban regions, this manufacture of air reaches particular levels of intensity. For a species which expires without air in two or three minutes, this anthropogenic manufacture of air is of incalculable importance. Curiously, however, urban air remains remarkably neglected within the political-ecological literatures. Accordingly, this paper suggests a range of key themes which a political ecology of urban air needs to address. These address, in turn, the links between global warming, urban heart-island effects and killer urban heat-waves; urban pollution crises; the paradoxes of urban pollution; horizontal movements of polluted air; the vertical politics of urban air; the construction of vertical condominiums structures for elites; the vicious circles that characterised air-conditioned urbanism; heat-related deaths of workers building air-conditioned structures in increasingly hot climates; and, finally, the growth of large-scale air-conditioned environments.

Engineering management to urban development, particularly construction projects are usually considered a ‘high risk job’ mostly because of, a lack of adequate government’s act with necessary policies, environmental information, and urban construction experiences. Similar construction projects may have very different risk characteristics of different development regions in Nepal. It is difficult for a newcomer to identify new risks, in a new environment and politically instable in the country. It is more difficult to assess these risks and impact of relationships among them. On the one hand, ignoring these risks is irresponsible and unrealistic decisions by the professionals. On the other hand, identifying and assessing all the new risks and their relationships is a very complicated, time-consuming, and expensive process. This process is possible for the majority of projects, especially when there are adequate amounts of information, skilled technical team, and enough time. When such a complex scenario faced the accessing and responding these vital risk factors in urban development projects becomes extremely important. Engineering knowledge is the basic tools to apply for drastic change in the country's infrastructures for urban development.

Enormous improvements in human welfare have taken place over the past two centuries, but these have been unevenly distributed and have come at a lasting cost of degradation of our natural environment. At the same time, we cannot stop the engines of growth, because much more economic progress is still needed in order for people in developing countries to have a decent living. But using the traditional environmentally irresponsible development paths is no longer defensible. To meet both the objectives of conquering poverty and protecting the environment, the World Economic and Social Survey 2011 calls for a complete transformation of technology on which human economic activity is based. The "great green technological transformation" that the Survey champions will have to be completed in the next 30 to 40 years, that is, twice as fast as it took to accomplish previous major technological transitions. Because of the limited time frame, Governments will need to play a much more active and stimulating role to accelerate the green energy transformation. The Survey details new policy directions and major investments in developing and scaling up clean energy technologies, sustainable farming and forestry techniques, climate proofing of infrastructure and reducing non-bio-degradable waste production.

The report states that a major technological overhaul of production processes is required worldwide to end poverty and avert the likely catastrophic impacts of climate change and environmental degradation. It also asserts that over the next 40 years, $1.9 trillion per year will be needed for incremental investments in green technologies. At least $1.1 trillion per year of required investments are needed in developing countries to meet their rapidly increasing food and energy demand.

This short presentation is meant to inform the general public of the challenges of global development. It starts by defining key concepts such as what is meant by a country's development level, the necessary conditions for sustainable development, how to compare the levels of development through the GDP/GNP, and why is the population growing despite a decreasing birth rate. Finally, recommendations are made in terms of how to finance the post-2015 development agenda. These are the result of the international development conference held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in July 2015. This digital artefact is available through the following link: Hope you Enjoy!

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.

Is it a mythical unicorn in the world of software development, or is there more to this overused term? This isn't going to be a sit-and-get lecture. We're talking about a face-to-face, interactive meetup where YOU play a crucial role. Come along to: Define It: What does "value" really mean? We’ll build a definition that’s not just words, but a compass for your Agile journey. Contextualise It: Discover what value means specifically to you, your team, your company, and your industry.
