Paleolithic Era
10,000 years ago
59 sec video
Prehistoric people
learned to adapt to their
environments, to make
simple tools, to use fire,
and to use language.
 Homo Habilis
 Appeared in Africa 2.4 million
years ago
 Known as “Handy Man”
 First to make tools out of stone
 Brain was half the size of
modern humans

 Homo Erectus
 Appeared in Africa 2 to
1.5 million years ago
 Used early stone tools
like hand ax
 Learned to control fire
 Migrated out of Africa to
Asia and Europe
 Homo Sapiens
 Appeared in Africa about
200,000 years ago
 Migrated around the
world
 We are the same species
(modern humans)
 Learned to create fire
and use a wide variety of
tools
 Developed language

 What are hunter-gathers?
 People who hunt animals and gather wild plants, seeds,
fruits, and nuts to survive.
 They migrate to where the food sources are located and the
climate is suitable during seasonal changes
 Men hunted in groups
 Often chased entire herds over cliffs
 This was productive and safer than hunting alone
 Women gathered plants, fruits, seeds, and nuts to eat
near camp
 They also took care of the children.
 Climate patterns changed across the world resulting in
the ice ages
 Read textbook page 36- The Ice Ages
 Terms to know:
 Migrate
 Ice Ages
 Land Bridge
Textbook page 37
Your tribe of hunter-gatherers has lived in one place as long
as anyone can remember. But now there are not enough
animals to hunt. Whenever you find fruits & roots you have
to share them with people from other tribes. Your leaders
think it is time to find a new home in the lands far beyond
the mountains. But no one has ever traveled there, and
many people are afraid.
Q: How do you feel about moving to a new home?
Discuss the question along with the pros (for moving) and
the cons (against moving). Create an organizer for the pros
& cons.
 Climate was cooler than in Africa
 New animals and plants
 Learned to sew animal skins together to make clothes
 Lived in caves or built shelters called “pit houses”
 Later homes were built above ground
 Tents made out of animal skins
 Permanent structures out of wood, stone, and clay
 Mammoth bones were used as structure supports
 Textbook page 39: A Mammoth House
 Lasted from 10,000 -5,000
years ago in some places
 Called the Middle Stone
Ages
 New Technologies:
 Bone & stone: hooks &
spears and bow & arrows
for hunting
 Tree logs: canoes for
traveling
 Clay: pottery to hold and
store water, food, ect
 First pets: dogs were used
to help in hunting Click for video
Explain why did early humans build shelters?
Recall what types of shelters did early people use?
Elaborate how did new techniques change the daily
lives of Middle Stone Age people?
