2. What are they? Spears are basically long shafts of wood, with two heads on each end of the spear. Ancient Greek spears were on average, eight to nine feet long. They all had a bronze head on the back of it called a Doru,it was used for bashing.
3. What are they? (cont..) On the front of the spears there was a sharp pointed metal head. The front head of the spear would usually be made of iron, but in some cases it would be made of bronze, or copper. There were also smaller, lighter spears that lacked the Doru, these weapons were called Javelins.
4. Javelins Javelins were six to seven feet long, and were only used for throwing. Some soldiers preferred carrying multiple javelins, and throwing them at their enemy. Spartans favored this strategy over any other. If handled correctly, spears could be thrown up to 175 feet, and javelins to 200 feet.
5. Spears Were Favored Weapons? Yes, Ancient Greek soldiers loved their spears. Spears were the favorite weapon of Ancient Greek soldiers. They favored their spears because they could throw their spears and use them as long range weapons, or hold on to them and use them as short to medium range weapons.
