Antal Experts Say
“Compared to our previous edition it would seem the appetite for hiring has dipped
over the past 12 months. Global hiring levels have dropped from the 70% hiring now
and 45% next quarter from the data in our 18th Global Snapshot, to 50% hiring now
and 45% next quarter in this edition - a significant reduction.
In Western Europe those numbers are also down from 56% hiring now to 46%, and
likewise the UK which has seen a dramatic tumble from 65% hiring now to 35%,
probably not surprising whilst the ‘Brexit’ uncertainty remains. Following the trend
the Middle East has decreased from 87% hiring now to 52%, APAC from 63% hiring
now to 47% and Americas from 92% to 54%.
So should these levels give us cause for concern?
The numbers show evidence that hiring is slowing down globally, however, should we
find that surprising given the unsustainable levels recorded in our previous
survey? Do remember that 70% of those who participated in the previous survey were
hiring - an unprecedented number.
The trends in this survey take us back to the global hiring levels of 2014 and
it appears organisations are taking a more cautious approach to hiring.
Taken in context almost half of those taking part in the survey are still looking to
inject new talent into their business in the coming 6 months and the war for talent
still rages in the Information Technology, ICT Hardware & SSC/BPO worlds with
renewable energy, retail, insurance, fashion and banking experts all remaining in high
demand.
It will be interesting to see if the slowdown continues in our next survey.
The data will then give us a clearer indication as to whether the cautious approach
will remain for the foreseeable future!”

“Talent war is our millennium challenge.
With an ageing population, a negative birth rate and educational levels dropping,
there is an increase of clients demanding applicants with a unique combination of
skills, more humanly oriented, with proven technical knowledge and many more
diverse requirements. This high demand, doesn’t look like it’s decreasing any time
soon.
In Romania, the war is difficult right now. Big local companies are willing to
expand but it’s extremely hard for them to find the best potential candidates
because they are not in a position to change jobs.
Foreign companies carefully look to our country but there is no intention of new
investments, they look for the best candidates to deliver their best, but it’s really
difficult to find these types of employers.
The increase on the number of companies that would hire next quarter show signs of
all parties coming to a more realistic approach of market opportunities.
Our role – as experienced headhunters – is to create realism in all possible situations.
A great success rate placing candidates is not our priority anymore.
Educating clients about the real situation in the job market and the shortage of
applicants is;
This would be the kind of consultants we would like to become, and then, we can
dream of a real success rate...”
“The figures pertaining to the Italian IT Sector reflect a certain amount of organic
growth within the sector but are also due in part to the incentives put in place by the
Italian government to stimulate permanent employment as a whole.
The increasing digitalisation of the economy both in the public and private sectors,
increasing online purchases and payments by Italians as well as the need by
companies to create efficiency and contain costs has created continued demand for
IT talent in many areas, ranging from software engineering to network security and
infrastructure services. There continues to be high demand for new graduates and
professionals with 2-5 years’ experience.”

“The new study conducted by all Antal International offices, makes it clear the
importance of technology and its growth benefits all sectors.
The overall increase in consumption and gradual improvement of the economy
directly impacts the hiring trends in the Fashion sector, Retail in general and directly
benefits the Logistics sector.
The Construction sector is moving forward again as its evident in our report,
increasing firing trends and improving countless sectors directly or indirectly related
to it.
In Spain, another important motor of economic growth reflecting optimism is the
Automotive sector, which, at the same time, helps and grows auxiliary sectors
including Chemicals, Engineering and IT sectors associated.
However, in Spain, it can be deduced from the data obtained that many companies
are still in a restructuring course, layoffs still being part of the process along with
new contracts for improvement and growth.
Hiring levels are more optimistic compared to the last AGS edition, being a highlight
in, increased hiring in the Engineering sector, which also reflects that the changing
process is not over yet.
The Automotive sector is clearly growing, as well as technology businesses and retail,
where hiring trends are more stabilised because the most important part of the
organisational changes has been done already.
As a conclusion, Spain stands out for the overall improvement - taking as
reference companies finishing the restructuring process, we can conclude that during
the next months the hiring growth and job creation would be more obvious.”
