2. Reaching the researcher
• The opportunity
• The project
• The partners
• The potential

4. Information practices in the humanities
• A Research Information Network report
• develop an in-depth understanding of humanities
researchers’ approaches
to discovering, accessing, analysing, managing,
creating, refining and disseminating
information resources
• Looked at users of specific online resources, humanities
departments, a research field, an international
collaborative project

5. Information practices in the humanities
Need for collaborative
environment, share
• Growth in systematic collaboration information sources
Support for cross
• More complex research disciplinary research e.g.
• Less time for research (occurs in bursts) digital humanities
• Some barriers: Need information in
• Lack of linking between archives one place, remotely
• Lack of standadisation of online databases and archives
• Difficulties in data linking arising from the lack of standardisation, and the
inconsistencies in quality, reliability, and functionality across different
resources

6. University libraries and information
services could help by providing a structure
that maintains digital tools and archives
and promotes development of innovative
resources.

7. A solution?
• A single European resource for research library content
• Standardised data
• Interface designed specifially for the needs of researchers
• Digitised content from all of Europe’s research libraries

8. The project: Europeana Libraries
• 2-year project funded by the European Commission’s IST-PSP
programme
• Will add over 5 million digital objects (including full text) to Europeana
• 19 research and university libraries are participating
• A project coordinated by The European Library

10. What the project will achieve
• A valuable resource for researchers with full-text search
capabilities
• A robust network of national and research libraries
• An efficient sustainable aggregation model for research
libraries across Europe

11. Getting there
• Create a sustainable business model
• Create standards for best practice
• Communicate value of
Europeana Libraries to research
libraries and to researchers
• Develop dedicated research
portal

12. Creating the business model
• Model the library landscape in Europe in order to
recommend a sustainable, domain-wide framework for
aggregating library content into Europeana, building on
the mechanisms developed in the project, in an efficient,
scalable and cost-effective way.
• Develop a new and enhanced business model and business
plan for The Europeana Library in support of its role as the
libraries domain aggregator for Europeana, including
governance, legal aspects and copyright issues specific to
the project

13. The Value Proposition
• What do research libraries want?
• Enabling searching of bibliographic records of texts in hard copy
and metadata for related digitised texts at the same time
• Offering OCR services for providers’ digital content to support full
text searching in the portal Pushing the data out to other academic
/ research services
• Providing access to universities’ own digital repositories
…and more?

14. This is just the beginning…
• Not just for humanities- social sciences,
lingusitics and more…across the globe
• News ways to exploit library metadata
• More research content from other
sources
