- We are quickly moving into the post-PC eraMobile use really took off with the launch of the iPhone in 2007.Android has quickly caught up to Apple, but then Apple launched iPad. Just this past November, Amazon launched the Kindle Fire.Different products, different screen sizes, orientations….So how fast is all of these mobile devices changing the technical landscape?
- In December 2009, Morgan Stanley Research released their Mobile Internet Report that boldly predicted global shipments of smartphones would surpass global shipments of desktops, notebooks, and laptops sometime in 2012. That transition happened almost two years early and is accelerating quicklyWhat does that acceleration look like?
- The growth pattern of mobile are steep compared to the growth of desktops.Just this past Monday, 1 Billion Smartphones by 2016, Forrester SaysThere will be one billion HTML5-capable phones sold in 2013, according to new research from Strategy Analytics

- Let’s face it, we love our mobile devicesAnd, the context of mobile is not so different from the context of desktop.Devices have additional capabilities that our desktops do not.GPS - LocationCameraMovement – gyroscopeAnd, we do ADDITIONAL things on mobile devicesAlign with mobile behaviorsLookup/Find (urgent info, local)Explore/Play (bored, local): Check In/Status (repeat/micro-tasking):Edit/Create (urgent change/micro-tasking):User expect the same content and functionality no matter what device they are using.We can’t view mobile as an excuse to give less.Mobile is an opportunity to give more.Users expect more, not less
- So what will be the next big thing?So what happens when 6 months from now, users are accessing our content on their TVs.Sure there was web tv, failed miserably, in the late90s/early 2000s, but there were also web enable devices back then as wellGoogle TV – Expected to be on half of all TV sets by summer this yearApple TV – Expected to enter the marketBoxee, Roku have blazed early trails for web tv.

- On a daily basis Web designers are asked to deal with an increasing number of diverse devices. Mobile & tablet don’t even begin to describe the situation. People are using multiple devices throughout the day.These devices are interconnected and used together.
- So what do we do? How do we develop for devices we don’t even know are coming?We can future-proof sites using the following techniquesResponsive Web DesignResponsive Web Design is the approach that suggests that design and development should respond to the user’s behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation.” – Smashing MagazineWe’ve made the web just like print, only clickableStatic sizes, widths, type, etc.But, the web is more than interactive print.The original intent of the web was platform agnostic access to contentdesigners can build multiple layouts using single HTML documents and selectively provide stylesheets based on different features such as browser size, orientation, resolution or color.

- What about healthcare? We believe that the healthcare space is no different.Patients expect to have all the information they can access at a desktop on their mobile devices.Patient is in the doctor's office and is ready to find out how much they will have to pay.
- Can we just take an existing design and make it responsive?Typically no. All that screen space on a desktop is addictive. We tend to fill up the space we are given.It is easier to move your stuff from a one bedroom apartment into a 4 bedroom townhouse than the reverse.Its best to design the mobile experience first.Which means, you need to focus on the content that matters first. Because on mobile, there isn’t room of all of that crack. Align with how people use their mobile devices and why. Emphasize content over navigation. Provide relevant options for exploration and pivoting. Maintain clarity and focus. Align with mobile behaviors
- Maybe an app is betterMaybe a mobile web siteQuite possibly, it is BOTH.
