Experts believe the tobacco plant, as we know it today, began growing in the Americas at about 6000 BC. It is believed that Native Ameri-
cans began using tobacco in various ways (including smoking) a few thousand years later. As time went on, tobacco and tobacco usage
became very common in the Americas. There is a drawing of smoking by the ancient Mayas from about 1400 years ago. In it, a Mayan is
shown smoking a roll of tobacco leaves tied with a string.
COLUMBUS: Tobacco was first discovered by Europeans via Christopher Columbus. Columbus received dried tobacco leaves as gifts
when he landed in what is now the Caribbean. Two of his crew are credited with first observing smoking when they were exploring what
is now Cuba. The natives taught them how to smoke and one of the crew, Rodrigo de Jerez took the habit home to Europe. In fact his
neighbors were so frightened by seeing smoke coming out of his nose and mouth that they notified the local Inquisition. Jerez was jailed for
7 years (and you thought smokers had it tough nowadays)! By the time Jerez was finally released, smoking had become all the rage in Spain.
BLUNTED ENDS: Smoking at that time was done via loosely rolled, open ended cigar type products with multiple wrappers or binders
held together by licking the ends of the leaves. As cigar smoking progressed many improvements came to Cigars. For example, one ‘new’
style of cigar rolling formed a rounded smooth tip. This “Blunt” end caused this new style to be called a Blunt. Nowadays most cigars, even
Coronas and Robustos have this same rounded end but the original term Blunt still applies.
INHALATION BEGINS: The birth of the modern rolled cigarette happened in 1614 in Seville. King Philip III required all tobacco grown in
the Spanish New World to be shipped to a central location in Seville, to control pricing and prevent oversupply. Because of this, Seville became
the world center for the production of cigars. Street beggars would pick up the remainders of used cigars, take them apart and re-roll them in
newspaper. Because of the scarcity of tobacco and their desire to enjoy every drop, they began holding the smoke in their lungs (inhaling). This
took hold and made its way through the working class until the practice became common. Thus the modern hand-rolled cigarette was born.
THE DAWN OF CIGARETTE PAPER: Of course burning newspaper had its own problems, especially with the then lead based inks.
Spanish merchants began offering plain unprinted paper for this purpose. One factory in Alcoy that was making specialized packing papers
offered the first paper designed specifically for cigarette rolling. This paper was later improved and an additional factory in Alcoy opened
to compete. Over time additional cigarette paper factories opened near Barcelona, then France, the UK and eventually there were many
factories across Europe. In Alcoy Spain there still is one rolling paper factory left, which can actually trace its roots back to the first rolling
paper factory. This Alcoy factory produces many of our popular papers to date. Brands such as RAW, Elements, Juicy Jay’s & DLX are made
using processes that date back to the origin of this factory. Some of the craftsmen at this factory have been making papers for generations!
SIZES: In Spain, the size that was developed based on consumer preference was approximately 78mm long by 44mm high. At first this was
the size that dominated the entire European market. However, King James 1 and his later successors enacted heavy tobacco taxes. This led
the British market to move to a smaller size which held about 25% less tobacco. This new small size was about 70mm long by 38mm high.
As the British Empire grew, so did the proliferation of this smaller British sized rolling paper. In fact, to this date in most of the common-

wealth countries the #1 selling size is this small 70mm paper. This paper became known as “Standard Size” or “Single Wide”. The original
Spanish 78mm paper became known as “Spanish Size”, except the British referred to it as One and quarter, in reference to how it holds
about 25% more tobacco than a British Standard Sized paper.
THE KING IS BORN: Flash forward about 100 years and the industrial revolution allowed the mass production of machine made
cigarettes. At first, most cigarettes were either 70mm or 78mm long without a filter. However in the 1950’s filtered cigarettes began to
take over. Consumers were concerned that by purchasing a filtered cigarette they were getting less tobacco as
the filter took up some of the cigarette’s space that used to be filled with tobacco. Thus large tobacco companies
responded to this by increasing the length of cigarettes to accommodate the filter. Cigarette size increased from
70mm or 78mm to a new 84mm size. This new size became known as “King Size”, named after the King of
England who was seen publicly smoking this new cigarette. Over the next several decades the shorter cigarettes
saw their market share shrink dramatically until they were all but replaced by the new 84mm “King Size”.
However rolling paper factories missed the opportunity to change their sizes to suit this new consumer pref-
erence and continued producing the legacy sizes of generations past. It wasn’t until 2009 when HBI finally
produced the world’s first 84mm cigarette rolling papers with their launch of DLX brand 84’s as they are called.
While it may appear that rolling paper companies are dramatically behind the times, this is common among
rolling paper factories as most companies prefer not to change with the times. However this sort of dinosaur
attitude has recently been changing as new and improved forms of cigarette papers have been launched in
recent years. Among them are natural unbleached and unrefined papers (i.e. RAW), ultra thin rice papers (i.e.
Elements), and extra slow burning papers (i.e. DLX). The next oldest significant rolling paper innovation was
the invention of interleaved rolling papers which was launched 110 years ago at the 1900 wold’s fair, and led to
the formation of the Zig Zag brand. Zig Zag means how the papers are interleaved in a zig-zag format.
CONFUSED? In Commonwealth countries the #1 selling size is still the 70mm standard size papers. However
in the rest of the world including the USA, Spanish Size (1¼) is by far the better seller. Overall there has been a
market trend towards this original 1¼ size and sales data has shown that it is increasing in popularity, especially
in the UK and Canada. Now that there is finally an 84mm rolling paper available, sales of that size are increas-
ing steadily and will likely eventually become one of the most popular sizes, mirroring the extreme popularity
of 84mm King Size Cigarettes.
Now we’d like to address so called “King Size rolling papers” which are actually miss-named. These date back
to 1984 when Rizla launched their 100mm rolling papers catered towards women that preferred the 100mm
cigarette size. People first referred to this as “Queen Size”. Another firm tried to outdo Rizla and launched a
110mm paper, and named it “King Size’. However this is a misnomer. King Size cigarettes are all 84mm long.
A 110mm paper is actually a longer “Queen Size” and is much longer then the preferred 84mm standard King Size. The aforementioned
“King Size” rolling papers were typically 110mm long and 52mm high. However the newer format of this “King Size” is 110mm long and
44mm high (sometimes called King Size, sometimes called King Size Slim). This has become one of the most popular sizes in Europe and
is growing while the older King Size is decreasing. The difference is the 8mm in paper height. The 44mm height is the original “Spanish
Sized” or 1¼ sized height, and seems to be the preferred height by most smokers for all rolling papers (regardless of length).
INFO ON PAPER COMPANIES:
There are 3 huge multinational rolling paper companies:
One of the largest is Republic/Bollore in France. They make Job, Top, Zig Zag, OCB, Gambler and Abadie.
Their key competitor is Imperial Tobacco UK. This large multinational tobacco company owns Rizla, Joker, and EZ-Wider.
Another very large outfit is Miquel Y Costas. They are the makers of Smoking brand, Bugler papers, Pure Hemp brand and Bambu.
After these 3 big guys come a series of independent brands (RAW, Elements, DLX, Skunk, Hempire, Chills, Zen, Juicy Jays, etc..).
Although we didn’t create all of these brands, HBI has become the headquarters for most if not all quality independent rolling paper
brands, especially the cutting edge ones. With the tremendous increase in niche market sales, HBI has been able to achieve large growth
and success. However our sales overall are still only a tiny fraction of the big guys.
Special Note about China: While China did invent paper; they did not invent cigarette paper with good cause. The Chinese Emperor
Chongzhen banned tobacco and ordered that anyone who smoked it should be beheaded. Tobacco was completely forbidden in China
for hundreds of years and thus no cigarette paper was ever developed there. It is only quite recently that China has begun producing any
cigarette rolling paper. Most of the cheaper rolling papers now coming out of china are actually shoe paper (the crinkly paper that you find
stuffed into the toe of a new pair of shoes) being marketed as rolling paper. While the two look similar, shoe paper burns fast and tears
easily. The Europeans have a long head start over the Chinese when it comes to cigarette rolling papers, and have mastered their craft over
many generations and hundreds of years.
*There are also the large companies Gizeh of Germany and Op Paprina of the Czech Republic however these two mostly sell in their home markets.
*One interesting note is that the first flavored tobacco was smoked by the ancient Mayans who perfumed their tobacco with reeds. That may predate
Juicy Cigars for originality, but we’re certain that Juicy Cigars taste much better.
*There is a story that cigarettes were invented in 1750 by Egyptian soldiers who had broken their only pipe. The story goes that they used leftover
paper that had been used to wrap munitions in order to smoke. However there is no actual proof of this story whereas the Spanish street beggar
story has much documentation.

Looking back many years ago ELEMENT’s
founder remem-bered seeing his father taking great
pleasure in roll-ing his own smokes. He always used
ungummed thin rice papers because they burn with
almost ZERO ash. Pure rice papers are just that, NO
chemicals, NO pulp and NO hemp. Over the past
decade we have watched more and more companies
jump into the Hemp Paper market and we saw that
most new brands were try-ing to ride a marketing
wave. They relied mostly on marketing and catchy
names to sell their products, rather then the
quality of the actual paper. To counter the trend and
as a dedication to fond memories of the past, we
decided to return to the “ELEMENTS” of smok-ing.
Thus we designed a rice paper in the classic style of
old Alcoy, pressed it to make it ultra slow burning
and incredibly thin. Then we added just a thin strip
of natural gum from sugar. The result is probably the
best rolling paper ever produced by man. Elements®
burn withzeroash,exceptforatinylinecausedbythe
sugar gum turning into caramel as it burns. Not
surprisingly, Elements® have become a top selling
brand across the globe! We are very proud of
Elements® and customer response has been
incredible.
In 2008 Elements® launched the new MAGNET-PACKS.
These packs were designed to better protect the
beautiful thin rice papers inside. Also, they keep the
pack closed (Josh said he was sick of seeing his beau-

was a project that came to mind after a friend gave me an additive free cigarette in 1993. I thought if they can make an additive free cigarette
why can't they wrap it in an additive free paper? There are many rumors about gunpowder rings and strange additives in conventional mass-
marketed cigarette paper, these additives could actually increase carbon monoxide. I became determined to produce and market the purest
cigarette rolling papers possible. My friends agreed to be my product testers.
They say "the devil lies in the details", and the problem was how to bring this ideal product to fruition. It took years of research and development (and
many failed attempts) until we finally produced the first sheets of what would later become known as RAW®
. Now do you want to know the really
nitty-gritty details of the invention process? I began having samples made of various unbleached fiber papers. Each one was evaluated and found
notto be suitable. What do I mean? Well, regular unbleached paper pulp can be a dark scary brown or gray. Think of newspaper or a paper bag. We
blended plant materials such as flax and hemp until the perfect burn rate, flavor (or lack of it) and consistency was achieved. In the end RAW®
became a beautiful translucent medium brown that is reminiscent of honey whole wheat bread. I was so proud of this beautiful creation. My friends
loved it.

I then designed a very meticulous Criss-Cross watermark with "hard stops" that accented the burn qualities of the paper and helped to prev
uneven burning (aka running or canoeing). This unique Criss-Cross PRYLJÄTTEN®
watermark is now famous among smokers 'in the know' and
helps set RAW apart from any Rawnabees.
RAW®
gum differs slightly with every batch. This is because we use a patent-pending blend of sugars from the Acacia plant with purehemp protein
from our friends at Manitoba Harvest*. We found that adding hemp to the mix causes superb results. Not only does the gum burn with less ash and
a smoother flavor, but it also causes the burn rate of the gum to better match the burn rate of the paper. Think of it as transitioning the gum to the
paper.

PLANT BASED GUM
Potato gum is a newer rolling paper gum made from potato starch. It can be
slightlyyellowincolororclear,dependingonthemanufacturer.Potatogum
sticks very well – often exceeding the tensile strength of Sugar or Acacia
gum.HoweveritdoesburndifferentlythanSugarorAcaciagumandittastes
bitter.Onereasonitworkssowellisthatitsbittertastepreventspeoplefrom
accidentally licking it all off the paper. For example if you lick sugar gum, it
tastes good and your tongue is automatically drawn to the taste – generat-
ing more saliva and possibly causing you to lick all of that gum right off the
paper!With potato gum, this doesn’t happen.
Sugar gum is as simple as it sounds, gum actually made from sugar or from
plantsap.Acacia(Arabic)gum,isharmlesslyextractedfromtheAcaciatree*.
These gums stick very well as long as they are moistened properly. These
gums require only a gentle lick to moisten the gum line. Unfortunately,
smokers often lick too much. This can “lick off” the gum and potentially
cause the paper not to stick. A good tip is to moisten the gum line from the
backside of the paper.
All of the ELEMENTS®, JUICY JAY’S®, RAW® (see below about RAW’s special
gum), DLX® and SKUNK® papers use these truly natural gums. These gums
are perfect for your Vegan/Vegetarian or environmentally friendly minded
customers. One-way to know for certain if a paper uses 100% Natural Veg-
etarian Gum is to see where it is made. If you see“made in Spain”, then the
paper is definitely uses a plant based natural gum since both factories in
Spain use only vegetarian gums**.
*AcaciarollingpapergumisderivedfromtheresinsofaparticularkindofAfricanacaciatree–theAcacia
Senegalensis. This Acacia variety was best known in the days of the Pharaos, today it has become more
rare.These Acacias are slow growing desert trees. It is said their roots spread out as far as 20 kilometers.
Now the tree is native only in the Sudan, although it has also come to be cultivated on small farms in
Mali, Niger and Senegal. Rolling Paper factories use gum from both of these sources, the wild and the
domesticated. Acacia resin, once tapped from the trees, is dissolved in water, filtered, pasteurized and
turned into a fine powder 100% Pure, 100% Virgin. It is a completely chemical-free substance, with no
additivesofanykind.Ipassesthehighestknownfoodstandardparameters;ithasamildtasteanditeven
has been said to have mildly beneficial characteristics as a natural cholesterol reducer.
**Warning; China is now producing knockoff rolling papers. Some copies even have the correct water-
mark on the papers. However the quality of the actual paper and gum is way inferior to the genuine
article. If someone offers you a deal that seems too good to be true – it probably is.
RAW NATURAL HEMP GUM
RAW gum differs slightly with every batch.This is because we use a blend of
sugarsfromtheAcaciaplantwithnaturalpotatostarchandpowderedhemp
from our friends at Manitoba Harvest*. This is our proprietary formula for
makingournaturalrollingpaperglue.Thetrickisblendingitinawaythatit
sticksperfectlyyetburnswithaminimalamountofash.Wefoundthatadd-
ing hemp to the mix causes the gum to burn with less ash and a smoother
flavour. Think of it as transitioning the gum to the paper. By blending the
same materials that are in the paper into the gum, it causes the burn rate of
the gum to better match the burn rate of the paper.

ANIMAL BASED GLUE
Animal based gum is exactly what it sounds like and some paper factories
still use it in their production. It is unfortunately that this practise still is
commonplacebutcertainpaperfactoriesusegumthatismadefromrotting/
fermenting dead animals (remember the old saying about old horses being
sent to the glue factory, this is based on actual fact). There has been some
controversy about this because unscrupulous companies have begun calling
their animal based gum papers“Natural Gum”.They claim that dead animal
glueistechnically“Natural”.Againthisreallyconfusesconsumersintothink-
ing that“Natural Gum”and the truly natural Sugar and Acacia gums are the
same thing. It’s important that you educate your customers on the various
papergumsandtrytoavoidonesthatuseanimalbasedgum(thisisdifficult
as brands will not openly admit to using Animal based gum on their pack-
ages and some might even lie about it).

truth oozes out of her pores – smokers can spot a non smoker (and a faker) a mile away. True “die hard” smokers would prefer to be serviced by their fellow smokers. Having a Nun tell a smoker which
paper or cigar smokes better is always a bad idea. At PRYLJÄTTEN we actually banned all machine-made cigarettes from our premises. Most of us smoke, and we smoke RYO, MYO or Pipe tobacco. We don’t
fake it – we love it and we live it. That’s why we do what we do so much better than any of our competitors. If you create a similar environment with your store and your customers, it will help foster a
customerpreferenceforyour store. You will become their store of choice... they will look to you for all the newest and coolest. They will trust your judgment and will catch on to your excitement.
HIRE STAFF THAT SMOKE
In interviews with some of the most successful specialty tobacco retailers across the USA, they all cite verbatim that one of the biggest keys
to their success is differentiating themselves from the competitors. The undeniable fact of today’s super-competitive marketplace is that the
consumers have an abundance of choices.
SO WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMER
CHOOSE YOUR STORE?
Inourindustrythemostprofitablestoresdonotchargetheleastfortheiritems.Themostprofitablestoreschargehighpricesbuthaveenoughcustomerloyaltytosubstantiate.If you build a beautiful
display for your rolling papers, you increase their value in your customer’s mind. He will now be willing to pay you 10-30% more per pack than he would if you didn’t have the display. It’s part of human
nature; Perceived value is more important than actual value.Who cares what a pack of papers is really worth - all you should care about it’s what is worth to your customer.We’ll do our best to help you by
providing multitiered displays, posters and signage.We must work together as partners to raise the product’s value in the mind of the customer.
FACT:
There are many ways to differentiate your store from your competitors but the winning method is to have a better selection and to promote that better selection. Although this carries through all products,
weareconcentratingonRYOproducts.TherearetwotypesofRYOproductsinthemarketplace;Commercial brands(bigbrands)andSpecialtybrands(smallerbrands).Commercialbrandsareonesthat
are more common and available almost everywhere. Specialty brands are the smaller brands that are only available at select retailed stores.
Let’s start with some basic examples involving a big brand vs a specialty brand.
PROMOTING A COMMERCIAL BRAND
On the west coast of America, Zig-Zag papers are sold at almost every convenience store,
cigarettestandandtobacconist.IfyousellZig-Zagpapersthereisnoreasonfortheconsumer
to choose your store.The consumer can easily purchase them at the local gas station or at at
any convenience store. You are forced to price compete against tens of thousands of other
stores and to accept a smaller profit margin.
PROMOTING A SPECIALTY BRAND

choose Elements® as their preferred brand then they will come back to your store to purchase

Let’s talk about merchandising. A store is not just a random conglomerations of merchandise; a store is a sensory experience.The easiest way to merchandise is to first make a list of the items youWANT to sell in

The relationship between PRYLJÄTTEN and your store is really more of a partnership than a supplier-customer relationship. So, if we can help you increase your sales overall in your store, then we

commital. If they have to open the door to your store they feel they risk embarrassment (what if the door turns out to be locked, then they look like a clown tugging on a closed door.,
what if they have to open the door and it’s the wrong type of store for them, what if they open the door and they don’t find anything they want to buy). Just like the first stage of a
relationship, it is important to not make the consumer feel trapped or forced to make a commitment. If your door is open, they can wander in, browse and feel they can wander out
at any time, without suffering any embarrasment. If they have to open your door - that is a commitment to coming inside and feel uncomfortable (just like on a first date it’s better to
meet in a public place for a quick meeting rather than at someone’s house).
OPEN DOOR POLICY
A good way to invite people inside is external music. Stores in pedestrian areas / busy streets seem to benefit the most from this; if a shopper is walking down the street and hears music that
appeals to him, he will look towards the source of the music.This could mean he looks towards your store (and its open door).This is another way to attract more customers.Try to use music that either best
represents your store or your target customer.
Once inside, if you only use a simple portable stereo (small boom-box) you’re limited in how you can spread the music around your store. The“life beat”of the music will only be near where the music is
coming from. So, they recommend that you use a full stereo system with at least 4 speakers placed in key points around your store.
Music is a tool – it can draw people to a particular location or envelop them in a certain feeling. To use music effectively you have to place speakers in key locations.

a manner that will attract more consumers (ie, for a classic tobacco store a painting of a 20’s looking man wearing a top hat and smoking a cigar will attract many consumers as this is the classic image they
think of when thinking of a classic tobacco store).

and not venture through your space. Putting the register too far back can lead to theft and bad service. So overall we’re told that having the cash register right in the middle of the store works out best –
