Daniel McGinnis discovered the depression. He discovered decaying parts of a ship on a tree right above the depression, possibly being a pulley system (Fanthrope).
He also had two friends, John Smith and Anthony Vaughan help dig on the site. They dug about thirty feet and found layers of stone and oak logs. They needed more machinery to continue and had to leave the island for several years (Keyes).
Daniel’s friends included Anthony Vaughan and John Smith (Keyes).
*(Keyes).
Oak logs were found at ten feet intervals, forty feet of charcoal as well as putty and coconut fiber layers were found (Keyes).
At about the ninety foot mark, a slab with a secret message was found (Kyrstek). The slab is said to translate as “forty feet below, two million pounds lie buried” (Joltes).
It is unclear if the ax and anchor fluke were left behind by another discovery crew or not (Ancient Origins). The scissors were found in 1967 near the money pit and were discovered to be Spanish and over three hundred years old! (Keyes)
Due to the poor quality of the picture, this cannot be confirmed. The hole eventually caved into itself making it now impossible to explore the finding. The hole dug was located about 180 feet away from the actual money pit (Keyes).
The team ditched the island after the pit had flooded and bailing and pumping were no help. It is said that the team tripped a booby trap set by the money pit’s designers (O’Connor)
The Truro Company (1849), The Oak Island Association, Oak Island Eldorado Company (1866), The Oak Island Treasure Company (1897), Dan Blankenship and David Tobias (1966), Triton Alliance (investor) (1968), were among the top explorers of the money pit (Nickell)
Franklin Roosevelt was also one of the more famous explorers of Oak Island (Strochlic).
Many others had come to try and solve the mystery of the money pit for many years without success.
Today Blankenship and Triton Alliance are at work at the island (Keyes).
Daniel Blankenship, who began his exploration in 1965, and Triton are still trying to solve the mystery today (Keyes)
Those individuals include, Bob Restall, his son and two other workers. They were believed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator (Keyes).
Maynard Kaiser lost his life in 1897 while excavating the pit as well as an unidentified worker in 1861 (Ancient Origins).
Some theories are that the treasure belongs to Captain Kidd, Blackbeard, (Kyrstek), the freemasons (Nickell) among other theories.
The debate on whether it is man-made or natural continues to this day. With everything found down in the pit, it would be hard to believe that it was natural sink hole (Nickell).
