Corporates love it too, but they don't have the agility, speed or guts to take it to fully embrace it. That's where corporate startups come in. Mark Dijksman will share his expertise in this matter and reveal how to one can take the best off of two worlds.

- Positive learnings: - QUALITY of people in corporates - Ability to really CHANGE MINDSETS - Sometimes, things can go CRAZY FAST(due to connections, pressure, brand,...) ->STARTUPS CAN LEARN A LOT FROM CORPORATES AS WELL.
- MUCH MORE FUN TO SHARE LEARNINGS ABOUT WHAT WENT WRONG BASED ON OUR EXPERIENCE WHILE BUILDING CORPORATE STARTUPS PAY BY TOUCH Using your fingerprint to pay for stuff in stores SOUNDS MEGA AWESOME, right? 3000 STORES. There’s just not much of a value proposition for the consumer to use a fingerprint. BUT THEY NOTICED THIS WHEN IT WAS ROLLEDOUT IN 3000 STORES VALIDATION Horror Despite those early customers, processing fingerprint payments has not taken off as expected. Pay By Touch claims that it has fingerprint scanners in 3,000 (!!!!!) stores, but the privately held company has never disclosed how many transactions it processes. For millions of consumers accustomed to using credit and debit cards, the proposition of using a fingerprint hasn’t been all that appealing. “It’s hard to fight the credit-card companies,” says Gartner (IT) analyst Avivah Litan. “Consumers are so used to racking up frequent-flier miles and other rewards that it’s like a David vs. Goliath situation. There’s just not much of a value proposition for the consumer to use a fingerprint.” - VALIDATION HORROR

- 3 big pitfalls for corporate(!!!!) startups (apart from the normal startup pitfalls): (1) URGE TO BUILD (2) DESIRE TO SCALE (3) RABBIT HOLES
- (1) URGE TO BUILD Corporates are used to building. WE HAVE A GOOD IDEA, BECAUSE IT’S OUR GOOD IDEA other flavors of proven models. Also, validating = chaos building = rest
- Parallel building (Tessa > integrate new value propositions while still validating main value proposition)
- Validation = extra cost. (Magnum case. We asked our usual agency and they can just build it and roll it out to 50 stores) Invest little by little in order to decrease cost little by little. OTHERWISE you’re building AIR CASTLES
- ASR case Client often jump to conclusions too fast. We found a customer segment that reacts to a certain message >>> LETS BUILD IMMEDIATELY
- (2) Desire to scale Corporates are used to scaling
- Vigi case (During validation, where retention was the key metric) Client wants to get to x downloads. Worried about decline in downloads. (While that was not the important metric at all). Forces us to get more downloads. (Downloads != scaling) The danger of vanity metrics...
- ASR case Hiring a scaling/optimization phase team, while still validation PROBLEM SOLUTION FIT. TEam too BIG for scaleup. And not the right roles.
- Tessa case Integrate with AMAZON-grade customer support service provider during validation phase. (And fulfillment party,...) But you should take BABY STEPS. We don’t have a million customers yet, so don’t build for it.
- (3) Rabbit holes - corporates offer everything. BUt be careful! Warp holes are often actually rabbit holes of death.
- Tessa case Payment Service Provider integration that should take ~2 days to be up & running, now it took us ~9 months.
- Tommy We have a design studio. They will take care of all the styling. No worries! Slow processes, design needs to be functional not take too long.
- Vigi We have in house experts. They will provide us with a solution really fast… 3 months of legal mumbo jumbo later….
- BUT the startup way is not always THE BEST WAY EITHER WE COMBINE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS AGILITY, SPEED, PROCESS FROM STARTUPS DATA, MONEY, EXPERTISE, BRAND FROM CORPORATES
