• The period of coverage for this presentation is
from January, 2009-September, 2010.

3. Laboratory Outputs
• For the period of this report; five reported
outbreaks have occurred across the country.
• Fifty samples (epithelial tissues and oral
swabs) were analysed.
• laboratory outputs-
– Virus was isolated in primary bovine thyroid cell
culture and serotyped using antigen capture
ELISA, and molecular analyses were performed at
the WRL according to standard procedure.

4. Laboratory Outputs
• FMDV type O and A were isolated from
samples under this period of report.
• A single type O virus belonged to the EA-3
topotype and was most closely related to
viruses from Nigeria (2007) and Sudan (2004-
2008).

5. Laboratory Outputs
• Eight type A viruses belonged to the AFRICA
topotype (lineage G-1) but fell into two
distinct sub-lineages, one of which clustered
with Kenyan viruses.

7. Training
• No proficiency test was undertaken during the
period of this report.
• One staff was trained at the OIE Reference lab
ARC-Onderstepoort, South Africa.
• The laboratory has taken delivery of FMD
ELISA kits for both antibody and antigen
detection from the WRLFMD, Pirbright.

Comments on report format
– This format will build a global FMD data bank at a
glance for the effective control of the disease.
Suggestions for future activities
– Much research should be conducted in least well
sampled areas of endemic FMD
– This will generate more information on circulating
strains in the region.
– Identify strains present in the region.
