Keynote presentation for Coming Together 2017: "Employing Ability" on May 6, 2017. Coming Together is an annual conference hosted by Service Coordination Ottawa, targeted mainly to young adults with intellectual disabilities and their families members. This opening keynote by Keenan Wellar, Co-Leader and Director of Communications at LiveWorkPlay.ca, was intended to inspire a call to action to encourage opportunities for employers and other citizens and organizations in the community to see the benefits of including people with intellectual disabilities and autism in their workplaces and neighbourhoods. The presentation was also recorded with the intent of being made available through the Service Coordination website.

We were honoured and humbled by a standing room only turnout for our presentation at this year's Community Living Ontario annual conference. Anna Nelson was able to take some photos as she was experiencing a very sore throat and could not present, but she did a great job preparing the notes about employment and Julie filled in - the employment presentation generated many moments of spontaneous applause! At this event we revealed that our Just Enough Support principles has expanded from 6 to 7! We explained why we realized that Autonomy needed to be overtly stated as the central principle underlying all others. We enjoyed a great audience and have already made plans to visit and be visited by other organizations to talk about Just Enough Support.

I was pleased for the opportunity to contribute to celebrating and promoting this incredible organization that delivers an incomparable and inconceivable service to the Ottawa community to the benefit of more than 250 citizens every day. The difference this makes for seniors, people with disabilities, and others who have difficulty leaving their home impacts more than just those individuals. It is better for our community as a whole when people have choices that reduce the need for institutions and allows people more time and a longer time to remain in their own homes as our neighbours and friends.

After steadily accumulating site-based infrastructure and resources for more than ten years, this charitable organization based in Ottawa, Canada, made a radical shift in thinking and actions. Starting in 2008 and over a period of three years, the agency completed a full transition away from day programs and other sheltered activities, finding new energy and synergies through partnership with hundreds of individuals and partners in the community. For individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families, in addition to the enjoyment of concrete results that range from employment to the development of new friendships, they report dramatic new feelings of hope and possibility, finding new energy through escape from ongoing dialogues about systems limitations and scarcity. Informed by collaboration with other agencies and thought leaders that have embraced person-centred and social capital concepts and models, LiveWorkPlay now seeks to encourage and support other agencies and jurisdictions to pursue similar transitions.

At a time when most every government and agency involved in supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities agrees that their goal is to support social inclusion and a full life in the community, why in practice does the sector continue to invest so heavily in systemic and programmatic infrastructure and practices? Although most jurisdictions have adopted at the very least the language of "person-centred planning" are individuals and families really being provided a valid opportunity to pursue a supported choice of community-based living, employment, and socio-recreational outcomes? This session will explore the disconnect between modern sector language of inclusion and community wand the contradictory ongoing investment in medical models of service and outputs. LiveWorkPlay, one of the smallest (by budget) agencies in an urban community of 1,000,000 has utilized social media as a critical component in a broader communications strategy.

The Community Summit June 18, Wenatchee, Washington Julie Kingstone LiveWorkPlay.ca (Ottawa, Canada) "If We Invite Them, They Will Come" "Engaging ordinary citizens in supporting welcoming and inclusive neighborhoods, workplaces, community venues, and reciprocal relationships" There are significant human resources challenges to providing person-centred and individualized supports and services. With individuals living, working, and engaging in social activity at different times and places, how can staff be all things to all people? For LiveWorkPlay, the answer has been to throw open their doors and invite community members and sub-communities (such as workplaces, sports leagues, and other gathering places) to welcome, include, and benefit from the contributions of people with intellectual disabilities in their lives and activities. With more than 150 volunteers and 80 partners, a team of just 12 full-time staff is able to facilitate a wide variety of housing, employment, and social outcomes for more than 100 individuals with intellectual disabilities every year. This experience demonstrates what can happen when a belief in community translates into action.

Some Reflections On 20 Years: The World I Never Knew, The World I Want To See

Read this is a blog: http://bzbz.ca/toc-staff Our nearly-yearly staff retreats are important to LiveWorkPlay not only to build hope and resiliency in the staff team through education and team-building, but for identifying opportunities and concerns, and making plans for addressing them. Over the years the team has helped establish priorities and strategies that have ensured LiveWorkPlay remains on the leading-edge, not only with respect to our direct supports to individuals, but also our ability to help the community welcome people with intellectual disabilities to live, work, and play as valued citizens. One of the key activities for this year's two-day retreat was a formal presentation and discussion of what we are calling the LiveWorkPlay Theory of Social Change. LiveWorkPlay has been engaged in a Theory of Change (TOC) process since October of 2013. We believe that people with intellectual disabilities are not broken. We believe that members that make up our community have not had the chance to welcome and build meaningful reciprocal relationships with people with intellectual disabilities, and as a result everyone is missing out. We believe the answers to including people who have been excluded lies in the abundance of opportunities that lie in the community rather than creating special places and programs for excluded people to go. LiveWorkPlay helps people with and without disabilities to connect, build relationships and enjoy what the community has to offer. We help people with intellectual disabilities to find opportunities to be valued neighbours, employees, teammates, community contributors, friends, husbands, wives, and more! Often people without disabilities living in the community are looking for opportunities and help with how to welcome and include a person with an intellectual disability in a neighbourhood, apartment building, workplace, sports league, gym, or club – LiveWorkPlay can help! Often people with disabilities are looking for help with how to find an affordable place to live, organizing support to live there, to find and keep a paid job, to contribute as a volunteer to non-profit organizations, to participate in ordinary recreation, sports and leisure activities, and meet new people and develop friendships - LiveWorkPlay can help! The staff retreat 2014 was highly successful. There were moments of joy as well as moments of concern, which is appropriate to our work. While our members continue to move forward in their lives, generating daily cause for celebration, the world remains a complicated place, with choices, rewards, and risks that have not been a part of the lives of those with intellectual disabilities, their family, or other supporters who came before. We must recognize with all due humility that we are also along for the ride. In the end, an inclusive society is not rooted in the mandate or activities of any one agency or collection of agencies.

This presentation formed the basis of a webinar delivered through the Community Networks of Specialized Care. The presenter is Keenan Wellar, co-leader and director of communications at LiveWorkPlay in Ottawa. Attending directly and remotely were representatives from about 20 organizations across Ontario. From 2008-2010, the LiveWorkPlay charitable organization in Ottawa engaged in a successful process of "de-programming" by completing a shift from congregated programs to authentic community-based supports and outcomes based on flexible and individualized person-centered planning. They have been living this new way of being for the past three years and will share what they have learned, with a particular focus on life-changing outcomes for individuals who have an intellectual disability, as well as a "social capital" approach to partnerships with citizens and organizations in support of a more inclusive community.
