5. คำอ้างอิง ( Reference Words ) คำ อ้างอิง เป็นการหาความสัมพันธ์ของคำศัพท์ หรือวลี ที่ถูกกล่าวมาแล้วข้างต้นเพื่อให้ผู้อ่านเข้าใจเนื้อหาโดยรวมมากขึ้น คำอ้างอิง คือ คำหรือวลี ที่ใช้แทนหรืออ้างถึงคำ วลี เหตุการณ์ ที่ผู้เขียนกล่าวมาแล้ว ในเนื้อหาข้างต้น และยังใช้อ้างถึงสิ่งที่กำลังจะกล่าวถึงต่อไปข้างหน้า เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงการใช้คำเดิมซ้ำ คำเหล่านี้จะบอกถึงความสัมพันธ์ หรือความต่อเนื่องของสิ่งที่กำลังอ่านอยู่

7. Anaphora Reference การ อ้างอิงย้อนหลัง ( referring backward ) เป็นการอ้างอิงถึงสิ่งที่ได้กล่าวมาก่อนหน้านี้แล้ว ฉะนั้นการจะค้นหาว่าอ้างอิงถึงสิ่งใด ผู้อ่านจะต้องอ่านย้อนหลัง คือดูว่า ผู้เขียนได้เอ่ยถึงสิ่งใดมาก่อนหน้านี้ ตัวอย่างของตัวอ้างอิงชนิดนี้ได้แก่ 1. P ronouns 2. Demonstrative 3. Relative pronouns 4. Impersonal pronouns 5. Verb reference 6. Noun reference 7. Synonyms

9. Demonstrative คำชี้เฉพาะ คำอ้างอิงประเภทคำชี้เฉพาะนี้ แบ่งออกเป็นประเภทต่างๆ ดังนี้ 1. Demonstrative Adjective คำคุณศัพท์ชี้เฉพาะ ได้แก่ คำว่า this that these และ those ที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ เช่น Chiangrai is in the north of Thailand . That place is very cold in winter. คำว่า that ทำหน้าที่ขยาย place และคำว่า that place อ้างอิงถึง the north of Thailand

10. Demonstrative คำชี้เฉพาะ 2 . Demonstrative pronouns ได้แก่ this that these และ those ซึ่งอาจใช้แทนคำนาม , กลุ่มคำ หรือ ประโยคก็ได้ เช่น I would have to do all the housework . That is going to the market everyday , cooking , cleaning and washing . . คำ that หมายถึง all the housework ( งานบ้าน ) ที่ฉันจะต้องทำเองทั้งหมด ซึ่งได้แก่ ไปจ่ายตลาด ทำกับข้าว ทำความสะอาดบ้าน และซักผ้า

12. Relative pronouns สรรพนามที่ใช้แทน คำนามที่มีการกล่าวถึงมาก่อนแล้ว ในบางขณะมันจะใช้อ้างถึง หรือขยายความคำนามที่อยู่ข้างหน้า เพื่อให้เกิดความกระจ่างชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น คำสรรพนามเหล่านี้ได้แก่ who whom whose which that เช่น She bought ten dresses that made by Sopa who owns the modern dress shop.
