The Second City in Chicago, an improvisational comedy club that launched the careers of comedians from Chris Farley to Steve Carrell, has delivered a successful product to audiences nightly for almost 60 years. How do they do it? By recognizing the power of feedback. Brian Eno, a pioneer in the music industry who produced albums for U2 and Coldplay, relies on a feedback generation system to ensure the best performances of the bands he works with. Likewise, the work of Eric Ries (Lean Startup) and Ed Catmull (Creativity, Inc.) has uncovered a similar pattern of organizations that thrive on experimentation and learning. These companies recognize the value of feedback at all levels – from interpersonal communications to user behavior patterns – and structure their organizations to take advantage of that value. They systematically spread learning across all levels of the organization as a means to solve problems that other companies can’t. In this talk, John Krewson will describe what it means to be a feedback-based organization. He’ll demonstrate how to recognize and generate feedback at all layers of an organization using innovative techniques drawn from the entertainment industry, and he’ll walk through several practices for making that feedback actionable.

"Blameless postmortems" and "learning from failure" are very en vogue in the technology industry right now. Both fall into that less-discussed category of "CI": Continuous Improvement. But for as much as we all talk about them, in many organizations and teams, the outcome of continual organizational learning and improvement remains elusive. Why is this? In this talk, we'll look at five "dirty words"* that are often thrown around during postmortems, retrospectives, and other learning exercises that not only make it difficult for teams to discuss learning, but promote activities and behaviors that are actually counterproductive to continuous improvement. We'll dig into the existing research on why this is — it turns out we're not the only industry struggling with this! — and look at some different language we can start using that can more ably facilitate sustainable Continuous Improvement in our work environments. *Not actually dirty words.

As the data world gets continuously more complicated (and even more complicated as cookies continue to get whipped from us), should we be relying solely on data or should we go back to leaning more heavily on intelligence and insight? I will talk about what happens when data goes wrong (both in marketing but also in things like politics (think brexit and Hilary Clintons team ignoring her husband in the primaries...) and what other things we should be looking at to fill its place/make it work better.
