Maps are everywhereâon the Internet, in our car, and even on our mobile phone. Moreover, maps of the twenty-first century are not just paper diagrams folded like an accordion. Maps today are colorful, searchable, interactive, and shared. This transformation of the static map into dynamic and interactive multimedia reflects the integration of technological innovation and vast amounts of geographic data. The key technology behind this integration, and subsequently the maps of the twenty-first century, is geographic information systems or GIS.

The mission of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is â to provide timely, accurate and useful statistics in service to US agricultureâ. Towards this goal, NASS conducts hundreds of surveys every year collecting information on virtually every aspect of agricultural activity. In 2010, the NASS Cropland Data Layer (CDL) Program played an important role toward fulfilling this mission using remote sensing techniques to provide operational in-season acreage estimates to the NASS Agricultural Statistics Board (ASB) and Field Offices (FOs) for twenty seven states and sixteen crops.

The structure of Governance in Australia consists of the Commonwealth Government, which also contains a State, Territory and Local Governments. High Resolution satellite Imagery is an important source for road network extraction for roads database creation, refinement and updating. Various sources of imagery are known for their differences in spectral, spatial, radioactive and temporal characteristics and thus are suitable for different purposes of vegetation mapping. A number of shape descriptors are computed to reduce the misclassification between road and other spectrally similar objects. The detected road segments are further refined using morphological operations to form final road network, which is then evaluated for its completeness, correctness and quality. The proposed methodology has been tested on updating on road extraction from remotely-sensed imagery.

A low cost method of real time pavement condition data sharing to expedite maintenance intervention Pavements for roads in cities and highways are degraded with potholes, cracking, and rutting distresses. There is a strong need to identify these locations and sections with undesired longitudinal roughness quickly and accurately every year. Traditionally, expensive standalone survey vehicles for roughness measurements and more expensive multi-function vehicles are employed by highway agencies or through contract services, which most cities and local agencies canât afford. The primary objective of this study is to describe a low cost method to collect essential pavement condition data and share real time to expedite maintenance intervention needs. This facilitates rapid identification of pavement sections with undesired longitudinal roughness and local defects. This paper discusses the impact of social media, crowd sourcing, and advances in cheaper accurate motion sensors and cloud server data processing. These tools make it possible to develop easy-to-use low cost methods, which are affordable by city public work and smaller road agencies.

Pavement management systems (PMS) play a significant role in cost-effective management of highway networks to optimize pavement performance over predicted service life of the pavements. Although, the Iowa DOT manages three primary highway systems (i.e., Interstate, US, and Iowa highways) that represent 8% (approximately 9,000 miles) of the total roadway system in the state (114,000 miles), these systems carry around 62% of the total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and 92% of the total large truck VMT. In this research, historical climate data was acquired from relevant agencies and integrated with pavement condition data to include all related variables in prediction modeling. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was used to predict the performance of ride, cracking, rutting, and faulting indices on different pavement types. The goodness of fit of the ANN prediction models was compared with the conventional multiple linear regression (MLR) models. The results show that ANN models are more accurate in predicting future conditions than MLR models. The contribution of input variables in prediction models were also estimated. The results indicated that climate factors directly influenced the pavement conditions, and ANN model results can be used by the decision makers to establish appropriate management actions to withstand harsh weather over the years.

Roadway data inventories are being used across the nation to aid state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) in decision making. The high number of intersection and intersection related crashes suggest the need for intersection-specific data inventories that can be associated to crash occurrences to help make better safety decisions. Currently, limited time and resources are the biggest difficulties for execution of comprehensive intersection data inventories, but online resources exist that DOTs can leverage to capture desired data. Researchers from The University of Alabama developed an online method to collect intersection characteristics for non-signalized intersections along state routes using Google Maps and Google Street View, which was tied to an Alabama DOT maintained geographic information systems (GIS) node-link linear referencing method. A GIS-Based Intersection Data Inventory Web Portal was created to collect and record non-signalized intersection parameters. Thirty intersections of nine different intersection types were randomly selected from across the state, totaling 270 intersections. For each intersection, up to 78 parameters were collected, compliant with the Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE) schema. Using the web portal, the data parameters corresponding to an average intersection can be collected and catalogued into a database in approximately 10 minutes. The collection methodology and web portal function independently of the linear referencing method; therefore, the tool can be tailored and used by any state with spatial roadway data. Preliminary single variable analysis was performed, showing that there are relationships between individual intersection characteristics and crash frequency. Future work will investigate multivariate analysis and develop safety performance functions and crash modification factors.

Nowadays every smart phone is integrated with many helpful sensors. Sensors are originally design to make the computer program and application convenient. The smart phone sensors like Gyroscope and Accelerometer are used to estimate road roughness conditions. The collected data is from sensor and easy to manage value in the frequency domain to calculate magnitudes of vibrations. Well maintained roads contribute to a significant portion of countries economy. Roadsense application provides information about rules and regulations (Vehicle Papers, Parking Rule, Distraction While Driving) to be followed while driving the vehicle. Throughout this paper, we discuss the previous hole detections ways in which has been developed and process a worth effective answers to identify the potholes and bumps on the roads. In our application mobile sensors are accustomed establish potholes and the bumps. The proposed system captures the geographical locations of potholes and bumps using GPS sensor among the mobile. These sense data sent for classification and uses algorithm C4.5, AES256 then this data sends for further processing. Finally the data is send to the vehicle driver. An android can be used to display the road condition in the map.

Rural highway route location is a very complex case, requiring significant time and effort from the planners. This study presented the route location method by applying Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Geographical Information System (GIS). The location of the study is confined to south Mosul city in Iraq of the area (198km2). The researcher is behind defining the route which connects Baghdad-Mosul and Mosul-Kirkuk roadways. This route is considered the suggested turn to Mosul city. A variety of data set from different sources and at different scales are managed.

This is the paper I presented for the WICT 08 Conference. The objective of this study looks at enhancing Open Source routing algorithms by adding functionalities and variables that favour fuel savings as well as shortest route. A system is developed using Open Source GIS (using the PostGIS and pgRouting extensions for the DBMS: PostgreSQL), whereby a number of variables, including weather conditions, road network, traffic status, vehicle specification data and road gradient are manipulated by the user to achieve shortest and most fuel efficient route. This study also provides neighbouring techniques for emergency response teams, so as to traverse the shortest route to an accident.
