2. Syllabus
• Definitions
• Details – Refrigeration ,Methods of
refrigeration steam jet, Pulse tube
Direct ice vapour compression
• C.O.P of Heat pump , refrigerator
Applications
2
3. Learning Objective
• Details of Method of Refrigeration
• Conventional methods Non conventional method
Concept of heat pump, refrigerator
3
4. Definations
• The transfer of heat from lower temperature
regions to higher temperature ones is called
refrigeration.
• Devices that produce refrigeration are called
refrigerators, and the cycles on which they
operate are called refrigeration cycles.
5. Definations
• The working fluids used in refrigerators are
called refrigerants.
• Refrigerators used for the purpose of heating a
space by transferring heat from a cooler medium
are called heat pumps.
• Application of refrigeration
6. Refrigeration
• Producing and maintaining temperature
below atmospheric temperature.
• Continuous extraction of heat from a body.
• Modern life without refrigeration is impossible.
7. Methods of refrigeration:-
Conventional methods
• Ice Refrigeration
• Refrigeration by Expansion of air.
• Refrigeration by expansion of gas.
• Vapour refrigeration system.
• Steam Jet refrigeration system.
Non Conventional methods
• Vortex Tube refrigeration
• Pulse Tube refrigeration
• Solar refrigeration
8. Direct Ice Refrigeration
• Non continuous method.
• Ice isolated from storage
space.
• System suitable for
storage plant.
9. STEAM JET REFRIGERATION
• Based on Principle boiling point
of water is reduced as pressure
reduced.
• Vapour from flash chamber
is mixed with high velocity
steam.
• Kinetic energy converted
into static pressure &
discharge in condenser.
10. Pulse tube refrigeration
• Simple method of obtaining
• Refrigerating effect.
• Gas expands and exhausted
lowering temp inside.
• Temp as low as 190ºk̰
11. Solar refrigeration
• Modification of vapour
absorbtion system
• Absorbant absorb
refrigerant.
• Vapour from generator
condensed in condensor
to form liquid.
12. Vapour refrigeration system
• Vapour refrigerant is
compressed in
compressor.
• Condenser rejects
latent heat at const press.
• Throttle valve lowers
the pressure.
• Evaporator evaporates
refrigerant and produces
refrigerating effect
15. Applications
• Air conditioning
• Food storage
• Freezing drying e.g coffee.
• Liquification of gases air separation
• Research in physical phenomena.
