Robotics as Means to Increase Achievement Scores in an Informal Learning Environment Bradley S. Barker and John Ansorge University of Nebraska-Lincoln Ansorge, J. & Barker, B. (2007). University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Robotics as Means to Increase Achievement Scores in an Informal Learning Environment from http://www.education.rec.ri.cmu.edu/content/educators/research/files/Robotics%20As%20Means%20To%20Increase%20Achievement%20Score.pdf Karina Liles | May 18, 2011 | EDET780 | Critique #1
Research Question What is the impact of the robotics instruction in promoting student learning in science, engineering, and technology (SET) for youth ages nine to eleven in an afterschool program? What is the validity and reliability of the assessment instrument developed for this study?
Background Robotics = Student Achievement The United States’ economy is highly dependent on advanced technology.
Overview of Study Nebraska Elementary School 4-H Afterschool Program Robotics Curriculum
Kolb’s Experimental Learning Theory Experience Do the activity Share Reactions and observations in a social context Process Analyze and reflect upon what happened Generalize Discover what was learned and connect to life Apply What was learned to a similar or different situation From the constructivism viewpoint, learning is an active, contextualized process of constructing knowledge rather than acquiring it.

Instrument Validation The assessment instrument was the pre and posttest given to the students participating in the study Two robotics experts validated the questions used in the instrument. The Cronbach’s alpha results and the KR20 score both indicated that the instrument was reliable.

  1. Read title….I am Karina Liles and this is an article critique
  2. This study examines two research questions. Read the questions….
  3. Look at paperWhile many who have adopted robotics in the classroom in previous years, had great outcomes….there is a lack of quantitative evidence on how robotics can increase acheivement in students.
  4. Kolb’s Experimental Learning Theory was the Thoeretical framework of the study. …deeply rooted with constructism theory that states
