This document summarizes a presentation given at the International Conference on Mobile Data Management in 2009. The presentation discussed research into improving mobile access to multimedia services based on MPEG-7 metadata. It described a German research cluster called UMIC that is developing mobile multimedia applications and services. It then discussed methods for enhancing mobile multimedia performance, including distributing services using mobile web services and enterprise service buses. The presentation evaluated these approaches through a system called MobSOS and concluded that scalability and interoperability are important for mobile multimedia services across different platforms.
