Despite boasting an international success
and a name that is synonymous with guaranteed media attention and front page headlines, the project being realized by MVRDV
for the Didden family is the first one that they
are carrying out in their home city of Rotterdam. The Didden family has lived for many
years in this great house in Rotterdam, the
top floor of a series of traditional row houses
of dark brick, constructed at the end of the
nineteenth century. At the request of extending the building the only possibility was, of
course, to increase the height. The result is
elementary: two structures, two simple parallelograms, with a pointed roof, without decoration or signs of interruption.
This intervention recalls another of a few
years earlier, at Ypenburg, on the outskirts
of Delft, where the only thing that distinguished separate dwellings was the different
color of the individual structures. It is not
the first time that MVRDV uses color as an
element of distinction. Another example was
represented by the Orange House, this time
in polycarbonate, which had caused some
complaints from the neighborhood and some
photographers used to working in black and
white. Even in that case, apart from the color,
the architecture was rather basic.

Here MVRDV plays with two complementary colors: red, which is used for some interior walls, and blue, that covers the exterior
without continuity, and the ability to shape
the building as if it were a model rather than
the result of construction. A cool color for
the outside and a warm color for the inside,
where it combines with wood; and here the
finishing touches are kept to a minimum.
Through the two structures, the designers
speak of a “crown on top of the monument,”
where the crown is the new addition and the
monument is the traditional architecture.
The crown is the prototype (reproducible?)
for further densification of the city, an element which is added to the existing texture,
and a new life on the roofs of the city. The
Didden Village is part of series of projects in
which MVRDV and their architectural output was focused on the expansion of urban
and residential concentration, experiments
to “test the potential of small programs on a
broader scale”, applying in architecture theories otherwise thought of only for the city
scale.
Living space here gets 45 square meters of interior space and in addition 120 more square
feet of terrace. Inside the two independent
structures there are bedrooms and bath-

I Didden abitavano
dall’ampliamento in altezza.

post-moderno nelle sue forme.

all’ampliamento della concentrazione edilizia e
L’abitazione guadagna
qui 45 metri quadrati di spazio all’interno più
120 metri quadrati di terrazzo. All’interno dei
due volumi, indipendenti, si trovano camere e
bagni.
I muri esterni divengono parapetti e come

rooms. The cost of the operation is minimal
because the cost of beams, supports, infrastructure and extra finishes are calibrated to
a minimum and achieve a price lower than the
basic equivalent. In the title “Didden Village”
the intention and program sound modern,
re-creating a sort of village with paths and
urban logic. And that is why the structures,
as shaped take different forms. The floor becomes an oval vase to contain a tree, or a table
and some chairs. The exterior walls become
parapets; like frames for viewing parts of the
Rotterdam skyline, or sitting benches. The
geometry is elementary in all the elements,
the oval of the vase, the parallelogram of the
construction, and the cylinder containing the
stairs, which is the link between the new addition and the floors below where there are a
living room and kitchen. Suspended from the
ground is a cylindrical volume, painted white,

MAT60_96-105_MVRDV.indd 104

that without touching the floor breaks the existing ceiling, exiting to the roof-recalling Le
Corbusier.
If it is modern in intention, this project however, seems post-modern in its forms. Built
of concrete, finished in polyurethane colored
blue, unifying every part of the project, cancelling gaps, framing, and every sign of juncture. There are neither gutters nor projections. This extension becomes a provocation
in blue on the rooftops of Rotterdam.
Anyway, if it is the slant of this Dutch trio to
reflect about cities, perhaps the implementation in architecture of some ideas thought of
for the urban scale, at the same time a plastic work of gigantic dimension, makes this
project similar to a design object out of scale,
a postmodern Objet Trouvé between classical
and vernacular, where architecture at the end
is a big game and a great colored illusion.

The Didden family has lived for many years in this great house in Rotterdam, the top floor of a series of traditional row houses of dark brick, constructed at the end of the nineteenth century. At the request of extending the building the only possibility was, of course, to increase the height. The result is elementary: two structures, two simple parallelograms, with a pointed roof, without decoration or signs of interruption. This intervention recalls another of a few years earlier, at Ypenburg, on the outskirts of Delft, where the only thing that distinguished separate dwellings was the different color of the individual structures. Another example was represented by the Orange House, this time in polycarbonate, which had caused some complaints from the neighborhood and some photographers used to working in black and white. The Didden Village is part of series of projects in which MVRDV and their architectural output was focused on the expansion of urban and residential concentration, experiments to “test the potential of small programs on a broader scale”, applying in architecture theories otherwise thought of only for the city scale.

I muri esterni divengono parapetti e come 16 MAT60_96-105_MVRDV.indd 103 13-11-2008 16:52:16

The cost of the operation is minimal because the cost of beams, supports, infrastructure and extra finishes are calibrated to a minimum and achieve a price lower than the basic equivalent. In the title “Didden Village” the intention and program sound modern, re-creating a sort of village with paths and urban logic. And that is why the structures, as shaped take different forms. The floor becomes an oval vase to contain a tree, or a table and some chairs. The exterior walls become parapets; like frames for viewing parts of the Rotterdam skyline, or sitting benches. The geometry is elementary in all the elements, the oval of the vase, the parallelogram of the construction, and the cylinder containing the stairs, which is the link between the new addition and the floors below where there are a living room and kitchen. Suspended from the ground is a cylindrical volume, painted white, MAT60_96-105_MVRDV.indd 104 that without touching the floor breaks the existing ceiling, exiting to the roof-recalling Le Corbusier. If it is modern in intention, this project however, seems post-modern in its forms. Built of concrete, finished in polyurethane colored blue, unifying every part of the project, cancelling gaps, framing, and every sign of juncture. There are neither gutters nor projections. This extension becomes a provocation in blue on the rooftops of Rotterdam. Anyway, if it is the slant of this Dutch trio to reflect about cities, perhaps the implementation in architecture of some ideas thought of for the urban scale, at the same time a plastic work of gigantic dimension, makes this project similar to a design object out of scale, a postmodern Objet Trouvé between classical and vernacular, where architecture at the end is a big game and a great colored illusion. 17 Interior view of the floor below the coverage that host the living part.
