»Canary Wharf« ist die größte Station der elf
neu errichteten U-Bahnhöfe entlang der Jubilee Line (Detail 2000/4). Die Station liegt in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zu ihrem Namensvetter, dem höchsten Gebäude Londons.
Sie ist zwei Geschosse tief in das ehemalige
West India Dock eingegraben und nimmt in
Stoßzeiten stündlich bis zu 40 000 Passagiere
auf. Die Notwendigkeit, das in den 80er-Jahren errichtete Geschäftsviertel auf der Isle
of Dogs angemessen zu erschließen, trug
maßgeblich zum Bau der gesamten U-BahnErweiterung bei. Heute dient die Parkanlage
auf dem Dach des Bahnhofs den Büroangestellten als Ruhezone in dem sonst durch
Bürotürme dominierten Stadtteil. Lediglich
drei muschelförmige Glasdächer sind an der
Oberfläche zu sehen. Durch sie fällt tagsüber
Licht in die Station, während sie sich nachts
zu schillernden Leuchtkörpern verwandeln.
Im Inneren des Bahnhofs bieten die Glasdächer sichtbare Orientierungspunkte, wodurch die Anzahl von Wegweisern und Schildern minimiert werden konnte. Zwanzig Rolltreppenanlagen transportieren die Passagiere in die Station, die durch nur eine, mittig
angeordnete Stützenreihe gegliedert ist und
dadurch trotz ihrer Größe sehr übersichtlich
wirkt. Büros, Kioske und andere Nebenräume
flankieren die Seiten der Tickethalle und lassen den Raum als große Halle frei. Die Materialwahl wurde nach Gesichtspunkten der
Haltbarkeit und Wartungsfreiheit ausgewählt
– Sichtbeton, Edelstahl und Glas.

Canary Wharf’s principal public recreation
space. All that is visible of the station above
ground are three glass domes, which allow
daylight to penetrate to the concourse and
which are transformed at night into glowing volumes. Internally, the roofs also form a means of
orientation. Served by 20 banks of escalators,

Canary Wharf is the largest of the 11 new
Underground stations on the Jubilee Line (see
Detail 4/00). It is 300 m long and two storeys
deep, and extends down into what was formerly the West India Dock. The station can cope
with 40,000 passengers an hour at peak periods. The roof is laid out as a park and forms

the station is articulated internally by a central
row of columns. The ticket hall is flanked by
offices, kiosks and other amenities. Durability
and ease of maintenance were the underlying
principles of the design. This is reflected in the
choice of materials: fair-faced concrete, stainless steel and glass.

Lediglich drei muschelförmige Glasdächer sind an der Oberfläche zu sehen. Durch sie fällt tagsüber Licht in die Station, während sie sich nachts zu schillernden Leuchtkörpern verwandeln. Im Inneren des Bahnhofs bieten die Glasdächer sichtbare Orientierungspunkte, wodurch die Anzahl von Wegweisern und Schildern minimiert werden konnte. Zwanzig Rolltreppenanlagen transportieren die Passagiere in die Station, die durch nur eine, mittig angeordnete Stützenreihe gegliedert ist und dadurch trotz ihrer Größe sehr übersichtlich wirkt. Büros, Kioske und andere Nebenräume flankieren die Seiten der Tickethalle und lassen den Raum als große Halle frei.   • 3. 3 U-Bahnstation Canary Wharf in London 2001 ¥ 1 ∂ 3 3 2 1 Canary Wharf’s principal public recreation space. All that is visible of the station above ground are three glass domes, which allow daylight to penetrate to the concourse and which are transformed at night into glowing volumes. Internally, the roofs also form a means of orientation. Served by 20 banks of escalators, Canary Wharf is the largest of the 11 new Underground stations on the Jubilee Line (see Detail 4/00). It is 300 m long and two storeys deep, and extends down into what was formerly the West India Dock. The station can cope with 40,000 passengers an hour at peak periods. The ticket hall is flanked by offices, kiosks and other amenities. Durability and ease of maintenance were the underlying principles of the design.
